I feel bad for people that were introduced to RPGs by Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy 1 as opposed to games like Bard's Tale and Ultima. I like both series (up to a point) but the first game of each was loving awful even in 1987, and this is from someone who played and beat both of them multiple times as a kid.

Is it going to have the orchestral music and the voice acting? Because those did a lot for the PS2 version.

I like DQ 1&2 but I think you should start at 3. The Gameboy Color one has I lot of great stuff add to it that not in the NES or SNES ver. DQ 9 is ok too but it has the same problem as FF8 where the crafting system is pretty worthless since you can buy the stuff the next town over by the time you can make the item.

Play either 8 or 9 first, and if you like those then go back to 4-6. 1-3 can be safely skipped unless you have a real hankering for grindy, unapologetically gently caress-you NES jrpgs.

I heard it has a ton of framerate problems that they never patched out, even before people mentioned them on the last couple pages here. Look for a copy of DQ9. It's pretty cheap and easy to find. It's even pretty fun if you can talk some friends into getting it.

Naw it's cool, I still got a chance to play those old PC RPGs later in life thanks to stuff like GOG and they're still cool. RPGs are cool.

I've heard about codename steam just being really bland and boring. I'm probably never gonna buy it but I'm just curious, did they ever end up doing anything interesting with that game, with the aesthetic, story, setting, characters, or anything? Or was it just kind of a mess of "meh" the whole way through?

It really didn't do much with any of it. The setting, characters, aesthetic, etc., were all great, but the story was extremely minimalist at best. It'll introduce new characters or locations and then proceed to standard missions such as "get to this point on the map" or "escort this person to this point on the map" or "destroy this alien." You get a lot of characters but outside of whoever they are, such as Dr. Venture-voiced Randolph Carter or Tin Man from Wizard of Oz but Japanese, once they're introduced they're just another body.

That's a shame. They seemed so excited about trying to ape western comics when the game was first announced but if the most that ever happens is "here's a new character ok bye" then that's lame.

Well, (western) comic books weren't exactly known for deep character driven plots. It was more or less good guys vs. bad guys/things. Stuff the Comics Code Authority would approve.

Didn't say it needed a deep character -driven plot. It just sounds like they just dumped some characters in and didn't really do anything with them
