I do remember reading lots of great writers though! Like William Safire, Thomas Sowell, and George Will :swoon:

It' not bad per se, it's the conditions attached to it. The money they get is enough to pay the interest on their debts, but not do a great deal else besides that. On top of that they want the government to seriously cut back on spending money, which in a recession is about as stupid as sticking your balls in a garbage disposal unit or donating to muir.

Economies only really function when people are spending their money, and the government is almost always the biggest spender in the economy. You force it to stop spending, people don't earn wages, which means they can't buy things or pay taxes, which means government income falls. It has a huge knock on effect through the whole economy (There is a difference between useful spending and wasteful stupid spending, like buying planes that don't fly). Cutting government spending when the rest of the economy is going well to pay down debt can work, but doing it when everything else is weak or, in the case of Greece, a smouldering wreck is pretty much the most stupid thing you can do and a recipe for disaster.

They are just invested in the austerity narrative because that way they can pretend they don't have to confront the real consequences of the last 20-40 years of economic policy which set this whole mess up.

The thing with Greece though was that the nation got forced into a lose/lose situation. There just wasn't a victory to be had so why the crap is anybody happy about the situation? The best Greece could really do is go "yeah no we're not going to accept a lovely situation with conditions, just give us the lovely situation, thanks."

He's right though. Greece voting no is a huge middle finger to the German banks, IMF, et al. Greece may still be in a bad situation, but they're showing they don't want to deal with austerity. That takes some courage.

Probably the biggest thing is this raging hard on for austerity that a lot of people seem to have developed is now obviously pissing people off. Granted the austerity cult is also, well, acting like a cult. Austerity measures just hosed Greece even harder so they said "well you obviously didn't austerity hard enough!" Now Greece is telling them to eat it and take their austerity somewhere else.

Read an interesting article the other day that basically said this of the Greece/EU situation:

Germany views the Eurozone as a bunch of freeloaders who only have it as good as they do thanks to the hard work ethics and spendthrift attitude of Germany. Greece is just another country for Germany to look down their nose at, and we might actually see a collapse of the EU thanks to all that regional rivalry rearing up again.

Germany's only interest in keeping Greece and other weakened countries in austerity is so that Germany's position in the EU is maintained, and to undermine those that are already vulnerable for their own gain. Other powers - like the UK or North American countries - don't really give as much of a poo poo because they don't have as much to gain from it.

In addition, Greece saying no to austerity challenges Germany's position in the Eurozone, as well as their idea that the debt actually has to be fully repaid. Merkel was warned repeatedly that Greece wouldnt be able to pay it all back, and she took that risk and now they're just trying to get that money back. Greece is just calling her bluff.

Germany also likes that position because they can play it to their direct advantage. In the years prior to the crash they set an inflation target for the Eurozone, which most of the countries hit, with a little wiggle room of going over or under. Except Germany which way undershot it. This lead to it being much better to do business in Germany than France, Netherlands, or Greece, giving Germany better growth through a beggar thy neighbor strategy.
