Grrr, I forgot my insurance renewal is tomorrow, and as is always the case, they want to charge me about 20% more than generic online quotes. Including their own. Will call them up and ask them if they fancy realigning themselves.

My default home insurance automatic renewal quote last month was 3x the price of the cheapest online quote I got from a comparison site... which was from the same insurance company! (legal and general)

I rang them up and had a go at them and they swapped me over to the lower price. Would have told them to gently caress right off for ripping me off if it wasn't for the fact that I made a claim 2 years ago and they were brilliant to deal with and paid out more than I asked for without any hassle.

I loving hate credit. No house for us.

Edit: 3 loving points because they look at the middle credit scores and not the highest scores or an average or anything else that might help someone out.

I did make a claim for a windscreen replacement, but I don't know how that factors in. I'll call them in the morning and see what they have to say.

We effectively don't have liability limits here. I think that nominally it's probably on the books at something like £20m, but if you did manage something that impressive, I think they would still have to pay out.

20m. :stonk:

I'm good for up to $100k... total. And since we have split limits in TX, only some of it can be allocated towards property damage (I think it's 50k with this policy?). I think I previously had 25k for property damage... which is insanely low given how much cars cost now. I could max out the 25k if I wiped out a brand new Ford Fiesta that was optioned out nicely.

Actually if I manage to total someone else's car, there's likely going to be a large medical bill attached, so anything more than a light tap will still get expensive. I did $0 in damage to someone's car giving them a tap when they stopped short several years ago, but my insurance still paid out almost $5k for an ambulance, ER visit, "pain and suffering", etc. I tapped them doing <5 mph, left no mark on their car, but wound up with ~$3k in damage to mine (clipped them with the corner of my front bumper, where there's no metal beam..) No, I'm not still pissed off about that, why do you ask?

Like stated, AZ MVDs are loving terrible. I'll gladly pay the 3rd party fees instead of sitting there for 2 hours then being told I can't do what I came in for.

Hail chat, including my $500 deductible, the xb is going to be $3600 to fix and the e24 $2200, with further work requiring another adjuster visit at the body shop of my choice (which said would most likely be the case).

They cut the check for the e24 but will not pay me for the scion because it is over $2500... Which sucks because that's the car I least cared about... They're going to pay the shop directly. I was hoping to say gently caress it and not fix the scion but I guess I don't get a day in the matter.

So now I get to shop around, they told me they were going to send me a list of preferred shops, but that turns out not to be the case. I'll have to do my own leg work here, and I have absolutely no experience in this.

Roof inspection is still a week away but no leaks yet...

It always baffles me how limits are so low in parts of the states. at $25k you're almost better off having no insurance and pocketing the money. I don't think you can even get a policy under $1mil here.

There's a few companies offering that $500k around, but the price difference between that and a million is almost negligible.

FLIGHT SAFETY TIP: Fatties out first

Post mortem on the dishwasher incident this morning; I pulled it out and it looks like the coupling between the fastener and the braided stainless line came apart, and it wasn't stressed or kinked or anything. Easy to fix but that really shouldn't have happened. I mean isn't this the very thing that they pretty much banned PEX tubing for?

Found this TV in the parking lot of one of the laundromats I maintain. 46" Samsung DLP, won't power on, but it tries to. The color wheel isn't making buzzsaw noises, which is a good sign, so I'm going take a $15 gamble and throw a new bulb in it to see if that makes it work.

Edit: I am unreasonably excited over what is essentially garbage.

Edit the second: Yeah, I'll check for exploded/leaking caps if the bulb doesn't bring it to life.

Nice find. I used to deliver and setup tvs in a pretty well off section of town. Back in 2008 we're delivering a tv to someone that had a 720p Insignia die on them (best buy brand). She was throwing it out so I offered to take it off her hands, $100 for a new power supply and some labor and that tv is still kicking to this day. Hope you're as lucky as me.

Here in Alberta the insurance companies kicked up a stink over PEX due to water damage claims and had it very severely restricted, and actually banned in some cases.

Canada converted from PolyB to PEX very late in the game, decades after we knew it was a ticking time bomb from American homes.

Oh good. I was worried there for a second. When we re-did the house we currently live in I made it a point to change all of the old lovely corrugated copper tubing (which in and of itself is a ticking time bomb) to PEX. I was starting to think I had made a mistake.

That makes sense. We do owe on it, we bought it on payments because the CU offered 2% APR.

Try another lender?
Mine did average the scores from the 3 credit places, which sucked because one of them refuses to fix a rehabilitated student loan on it, so instead of high 700s mine averaged to ~730ish.

Wife and I went to drive a TSX wagon today since we want to get a dog and have a kid soon. It'd replace her Civic. We've driven one before and liked it but needed a refresher.

"It feels so roomy in here!" she said. After the test drive I parked next to her Civic and they eyeballed the same; compared measurements of the seating area and they were near identical. Basically a Civic with 2.5 trunks stacked vertically.

I wish we could justify it after that but even after selling her car and getting a discount at the dealer it'd be ~16-19k for 2.5 trunks (and nicer trim and 100k less miles but that isn't really what's motivating us to buy).

Pip-Pip old chap! Last one in is a rotten egg what what.

So one of the machines I'm responsible for at work has a ludicrously complicated* 2D pick'n'place system on one end, 1400mm stroke, 200kg capacity, 2.4s cycle time. It's a stupid design, it's overloaded, it's inadequately maintained and nearly 20 years old with no replacement in sight. My Boss2 was talking about replacing it with a used 6-axis robot from another department and I called him on it, going off on one about how stupid an idea it was, how we should replace it with a gantry-style XZZservo driven system. My boss after that meeting told me to run any ideas past him before bringing them up like that again, I thought I was in the poo poo.

Today, £700,000 budget, 13 month timeframe, hop to it. :stare:

I, I may have a little research to do, super loving quick, as I'll need to get a deposit down on something like this by November at the latest. It'll take me that long to write a spec, I think. I'm so boned.

*Ludicrously complicated: Servo drives through 90:1 planetary reduction gearbox. Crank arm at the end lifts & drops a linkshaft. Linkshaft pushes & pulls a 110' gear segment("Quadrant"). Quadrant drives the pinion. Pinion shaft swings another crank around a horseshoe-shaped guide, with a die spring pushing it out at the corners to follow a 'squared off semicircle' or 'rounded rectangle' path. that drives a parallel arm along Hang a 200kg assembly on the end with 2 sets of vacuum cups that can adjust in height & width to pick up different sheets. Watch every component break continuously and the guys running the line blame me personally because I was the last near it.

Oh and this is 1/3rd of the machinery at that end of the machine, so it has to play nice with the other 2/3rds until it's replaced as well, or the budget covers those 2/3rds as well, I don't know I'm boned.
