I have a big ensoniq synth with tons of classic sounds on it and I've barely touched in in a year vsts are so good

pyf vst synths I mess with tons of them but always find myself using razor, monark and sylenth for everything razor is my favourite I think

I do get it from a collector's perspective, and a luxury perspective buying them to make music is dumb though

Amethyst posted:why bother with hardware synths at all, seriously they sound better, look cooler and are more fun to collect. a lot of it is also like the discussion of culture in the webcomic, accidental space spy. culture is better if it's difficult to understand and, hence, imitate. getting your head around, and getting the software set up (and usually the vintage computing equipment to run it on) to patch old hardware just gives you so much huger a synth peen than loading a copy of massive.

i don't think one way or the other is inherently superior along every axis. personally i have found that i am far more creative when i have a physical synth in front of me. i have a really hard time getting anything done when i have infinite flexibility

Amethyst posted:you can do that with soft synths. in fact you can do way more with soft synths yeah, but VSTs stopped being interesting to mess around with for me like 5 years ago sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. altho if I have a concrete idea in my head before I go into the studio, I can get stuff down faster with a DAW and the two VSTs I use for everything (Analog + Operator, I'm 100% fluent with them so I get poo poo done fast with them). however, just messing around for fun is way more fun doing on synths. also, you really can't emulate the crusty analog sounds I get out of my korg mono/poly, or sequential multitrak with softsynths. different uses for everything. they're all tools in the end, and to me it's better to have more tools at your disposal than less.

philosophically I could stick to a MBA runnign Abletonb Live and do mostly everything, however I am a Human in the end and like having fun + looking at cool stuff with my Eyes and interacting with them with my Hands.

i'm seriously skeptical about the "warmth" of analogue synths compared to modern virtual analog stuff. people couldn't tell the difference between korg's ms20 vst that came out 11 years ago unless it was a direct a/b test. I understand everything else you're saying though, if you prefer the "feel" of standalone instruments I get that.

it would be cool to make a virtual analog synth with a knob that simulates the components getting old and malfunctioning

i prefer hardware so far because the bewildering amount of options in any daw results in me just not producing anything at all also its way easier to get sidetracked on computer
