sassassin posted:I still don't know what soldier was supposed to be for. It's a giant super soldier arms race/pissing contest against...? Shinra own the whole world. Shinra didn't own the whole world when it started. Soldier was a big part of their subjugation methods. They in particular distinguished themselves in the Wutai war. Wutai, if you recall were ancient magic Japanese ninjas who kicked everyone's rear end until NotAmerica used SOLDIERS and threatened to use the Junon Canon against them.

Even after Wutai fell in line they still need to subjugate the poors like Avalanche and Corel. e. apparently they aren't for protecting headquarters because you will maybe get a random encounter for one if you're lucky since so few of the floors are actually patrolled by anyone?

Personally I was always interested what the S.O.L.D.I.E.R. stands for, especially since the Polish magazines made a point to translate the acronym literally and that can't make sense. Were there non-English version with changed name? I think the Japanese version had S.O.L.D.I.E.R. as well? Presumably the first letter stands for "Shinra", but the rest? "Shinra Operational Lethal Dudes Investigating Enemies' Realms"? Szurumbur fucked around with this message at 16:28 on Jul 8, 2015 |

Someone once told me it was Shinra Operations, Logistics, Defense, & Intelligence Expert Regiment but I'm pretty sure they were backronym-it but I always liked the sound of it. At the same time A.V.A.L.A.N.C.H.E is in the game so who the gently caress knows

Soldier isn't an acronym at all. In the Japanese game it is just the English word Soldier. They translated it as SOLDIER to keep that but differentiate it from the actual word Soldier.

I think the name in Japanese was just SOLDIER. Not an acronym, just a loanword from english. Like the Ninja militia in the congo.

if i recall, nomura stated Dissidia is canon to every FF game, it was sort of a Persona Q situation where they tripped and stumbled into a nexus world for a while then lost all their memories when it was over and returned to their own points in time

I loving love all the idiotic ways they've tried to connect these wildly different games.

There's crossed wires because of dumb poo poo like FF12&T and Dissidia and Gilgamesh but I optimistically believe that FFX-2 interview was leaning hard into a dumb fan fiction joke like when Kojima was baiting nerds that MGS and Snatcher shared a timeline.

I loved Dissidia a lot, but I thought it was best if I ignored any and all attempts it made at connecting the Final Fantasies. I treat any and all timeline theories the same way. Terrible idea that plagues Zelda to this day.

It's generally believed that Gilgamesh is always the same guy in most of the games because he travels through the void to other universes. Usually. FF IX Gilgamesh is debatable and XI Gilgamesh is almost definitely not the same guy. In a few games, Gilamesh even makes reference to Bartz.
