We're all familiar with the classic satellite nighttime city lights picture. But check out this little detail: what the... that's in north dakota! There are like 2 people living there, yet the lights are equivalent to the twin cities  Any guesses what that is?

alnilam posted:Yup, flare gas. It isn't really though, it's an effect of the light sensors. If you look closer at the actual cities you'll see that they're more intensely bright by far. The fields are only as bright as the outlying exurbs and small towns, really, just that they're clumped together.
