So I just watched Exam and Would You Rather on netflix, and I really enjoyed them. What are some more movies that are like that? I'd prefer not to have anything to gore-porny like Saw, I mostly just like the mindgames/mindfuck elements of the films.

After I watched Exam, I followed it with a movie called The Experiment (based on the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment) with Forrest Whitaker, and I think Adrian Brody. You might like that one too.

The Experiment is a lot smaller movie overall: mostly set in a single, claustrophobic setting with the constant threat of brutal violence throughout (and some that actually happens), but no big Hollywood action sequences.

I first saw it recently (after it was referenced heavily in a Hawkeye comic), but I've always been a Raymond Chandler fan, and I fell in love with the movie. It would be a great triple-feature with Inherent Vice and The Big Lebowski, two films that owe it a great debt. Also, watch The Two Jakes (the actual sequel to Chinatown, which isn't bad, and it has Tom Waits in it), and L.A. Confidential, one of my favorite movies of all time, based on a gripping, sprawling, complex novel by my favorite mystery writer, James Ellroy. The Black Dahlia is also based on an Ellroy novel, but the movie isn't nearly as good as any of these others. But if you're in the mood for neo-noir and have exhausted your other options, it may scratch an itch. The second season of True Detective, airing now on HBO, is set in the present day, but it seems to be going over some similar themes to Chinatown.

The Black Dahlia is not good at all, it has hints of potential quality, but they gently caress it up so immensely. Especially compared to LA Confidential, which I will second the recommendation to that Chinatown fan.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'm gonna watch The Long Goodbye. My brother's actually been telling me to watch some Robert Altman movies and this looks like a good one. I've seen LA Confidential a few times and I'm a big fan.

For the latter, definitely watch the director's cut and if that's not available, mute the audio until you see Kiefer Sutherland look at his pocket watch, because the movie idiotically spoils a major plot point in a voice over E: Christopher Nolan's first movie, Following, might also be a good fit.

If you haven't seen it, The Conversation came out in 1974, was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and stars Gene Hackman as an introverted surveillance expert who's troubled by the potential fallout of a meeting he's hired to record for a powerful businessman. Also, it's great, and should make for an interesting comparison / contrast to Chinatown (which came out the same year).

Looking for movies similar to Pontypool. Movies with interesting/unique plot elements, a good amount of humor, and horror that comes from off screen descriptions rather than shown directly. Also, no jump scares. I loving hate jump scares.

I recently read about films like The Gods Are Crazy, which are exploitative in that they depict African/non-Western cultures as primitive and use it for comedy material or shock value. Mondo films belong in a similar genre -- except they are presented as documentaries or pseudo-documentaries. What are some films that belong in these genres BUT subvert their conventions?Ideally something funny or amusing that parodies the exploitative films.

Neither one of those is really what I'm looking for. Pontypool is basically a bottle movie that all takes place in the recording studio of a small town radio news DJ. The horror comes out of call-in descriptions of what's happening and is, for me, one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. The humor comes out of the DJ being a snarky rear end in a top hat. Both suggestions so far seem to be kind of campy B-movie horror. I've seen Slither, didn't care for it. Although it has the distinction of being the only movie I've ever seen where the main character has my last name, so that was exciting for me I guess.

What I enjoyed about Pontypool was that the filmmakers created an atmosphere of unease second-hand disclosure. The viewer only had the information that the main characters did, and when more information was revealed, the film reimagined a horror trope in a way that felt fresh (even if they were nodding to the novel Snow Crash in the process). The characteristics of this film that may have created this atmosphere include: 1. Enclosure – the characters spend almost the entire film confined together. This limited their ability to access information from outside, and like a good bottle episode of a TV show, the plot was mostly character driven. 2. Snappy dialogue – this goes hand-in-hand with “good characters,” which I recognize is vague, but a bottle setup can only really work if the writers give the few characters well rounded personalities. 3. Lower budget? Canadian? – While there are plenty of lower budget films that are dreadful, it felt like the film wasn’t trying to rely heavily on campiness or storylines that are tried and true horror classics. Whether this is because the film is independent, because it is Canadian, or because it is independent and Canadian, I’m not sure.

Maybe Monsters. It's not really horror per se, but I'm not really sure what it is. The titular monsters are more talked about than they are seen but they have a looming presence throughout the movie. Not much humor that I can remember though.

Assuming you're talking about The Gods Must Be Crazy and you haven't actually seen the movie yourself I kinda feel that it's what you're talking about exactly. Yes the African villager's are depicted as primitive, but it's a harmonious society until western capitalism is introduced via a coca-cola bottle.

Some of my favorite movies include Heat, Ronin, Inside Man, and Sneakers, and I'm looking for more tactical, perhaps gritty, dramas to fill out my playlist. It seems there are a number of movies coming out which may fit the bill, but there have been some exceptional stinkers. Has anyone recently come across high-quality films (not necessarily English language) that may fit the bill?
