Yeah I get that and how that relates to 'canon'. I also hate the whole thing of canon when really it's not the fault of the nerds, but the fault of the writers who can't even keep track of their own poo poo. It's like when they start they can just use flashy lights and stuff, because you're entertaining kids. Then they get older and you want to make better works, and then you realize your earlier works are biting you back because everyone who read it will say 'why isn't this here, this didn't work the way you showed it to us'.

Then you add in multiple timelines with varying degrees of quality with writers and artists of varying skill levels and an executive order to make all the stories work together despite tone and intent, and it's all a clusterfuck that deserves to be jettisoned off the face of the earth. No wonder I stopped reading comic books.

didn't they try to just fix all of the continuity all the time? it seem like it never stick.

I honestly only like comic book movies more then the books due to the comic books continuity is just insane to follow, I know the MCU and DC is starting to go that way which iswhy I love guardians of the galaxy since there is only 5 minutes of MCU connecting.

The Westphall theory always felt like one of those games, where a designer on the team includes some innocuous game mechanic, and it's completely overlooked by all the other designers and QA and playtesters and the majority of players of the game. Then one person realizes a combo with that mechanic that completely breaks the entire game. Like, instant-win, unblockable, everyone has to play it or lose broken.

So they had to nerf it so that instead of destroying all of reality as we know it (or more accurately, as Tommy dreamt it), The Westphall Theory is now "just a fun game".

Hate to "um, actually" a discussion about continuity nitpicking, but um actually the Westphall theory goes back to 1999-2000 in alt.tv.homicide. I'd find the original thread, but I can't be arsed to deal with Google's newsgroup "interface". Your linked article even mentions the original discussions (websites now defunct).

That article may have adopted the Westphall Theory, but our entire reality as Tommy knows it was born into it.

it also helps that there was a alternate ending to the show that links 5 others shows done by the game guy like homicide and cheers, but it was dished when the main guy that is the head of homicide at the time said that he didn't want his show be a kids dream.

Counterpoints:

St. Elsewhere links to Star Trek, which includes DS9, which includes "Far Beyond The Stars", that heavily implies the entire "real world" is a dream by an alternate universe Sisko-- insane in an institution and dreaming of Star Trek. It's a dream in a dream.

Which seems convoluted, except... there are shows that are "dreams" of Tommy that themselves mention St. Elsewhere, which means that St. Elsewhere itself is a dream dreaming of itself.

Or, as the Universe has retconned (to prevent collapsing on itself), it's all just a joke on a newsgroup.

And that newsgroup now exists as an archive in a Google Group, which itself is a breath away from Google's new Dreaming AI...

I watched wrestling as a kid and mostly forgot about it, which is why it's so great to revisit it now with these guys, who are both funny and well-informed about the entire era. A good podcast about sweaty men.

I feel like it's one of those things where you can see a kernel of a really interesting idea that, with a really good writer, could have been a loving awesome feud" Rikishi was super over then and a heel turn could have been really well done. The problem was it lasted, poo poo like a month? Then Austin went straight into a HHH feud and Rikish became a lovely midcard heel. The worst part is that we're VERY closer to Mania now so Austin being mega pissed at HHH and then teaming with him happen in an absurdly short amount of time

Mania X7 is loving amazing and I reccomend anyone who is even barely interested in wrestling check it out, but good lord aside from Austin's frankly amazing heel turn (his promo with JR on Smackdown is some of his best work ever . We enter into some dark times afterwards.

Oh poo poo, I need to look into this podcast. I was a kid and super into wrestling at that time. I still fondly remember characters like the Undertaker, Kane, the Rock, Triple H, Eddie Guerrero and Mick Foley, but there's a weirdly large dumb kid part of my heart that is still completely sold on Stone Cold Steve Austin being a gigantic world-conquering badass. His name still evokes the sound of glass breaking to me. Has the podcast done any shows going over the careers of specific wrestlers?

Kevin Mahon of the Attitude Era Podcast is doing another podcast that's apparently doing exactly this. It's called How2Wrestling, and it's supposed to be a thing where we get a look at a certain wrestler each week. The latest episode right now is about John Cena, but the next one coming up is about Stone Cold Steve Austin, so look forward to that one.

Does anyone know of any good reviews of the following:

  • The original Star Wars (stand alone or full trilogy is fine). I mean the actual films, I've seen plenty on the production history. Something SFDebris or Plinkett-ish where it looks in-depth at the film as a film.
  • Reviews of non-superhero non-manga comics. I'm not too picky here, it could be stuff from webcomics, to Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, to Nodwick, to Asterix and Obelix. I know Linkara very occasionally does stuff like this (esp. from Patreon requests now), but he's mostly a superhero guy.

And I mean "entertaining/decent quality" reviews, I'm sure some exist somewhere even if they're crappy.

They usually give a bit of background whenever someone new comes in or leaves. And sometimes they'll do a special episode not in the PPV timeline as an excuse to talk about a specific person's career (Steve Austin's Broken Skull challenge, Vince Russo's meltdown at Bash at the Beach 2000). But the only wrestler they've done a specific career retrospective episode on was Owen Hart. And that was in place of Over the Edge '99, for obvious reasons

Funny thing, most of them still wrestle as recently as a few months ago. Triple HHH is basically the new head of the company. I think Mick Foley wrestled in a different company as far as 2011.
