Greetings to Noisebridge,
I have not posted for quite a while but still keeping an eye on the list
- much more easy and pleasant thing to do these days by the way
congratulations.
I would like to invite people who are into the food, drinks and bio for
collaboration and support of Food Hacking Base (fhb) project, this time
at CCC Camp 2015. You may have noticed already we are running
crowdsourcing campaign to make the Food Hacking Base (fhb) project
possible at CCC camp so here comes your chance to help us to spread the
word and contribute hoping you find it interesting and worth of support

https://www.indiegogo.com/at/fhbcamp2015

you may like to check the access to all perk which comes with food
provided during the event, we aim on high quality food, organic if
possible and always having vegan options - well as in the days of
Tastebridge more or less, that is where we came from to a degree :-)

Fhb is always trying to be as open as possible so just come and hang
around during the camp or at least pop in to say hi as you did at 31c3it
make me happy.

The highlight for this event will be finally a Biolab venue and we will
do our best to build two workshop venues because we were way out of
space at last events. For the ones who are into brewing as me, check the
Probiotic Drinks Everywhere project, that is my baby

https://events.ccc.de/camp/2015/wiki/Projects:Fhb_probiotic_drinks_everywhere

Thanks for any type of support it is really appreciated! By the way we
hope to be also present at

MRMCD 2015

https://mrmcd.net/2015/index.en.html

and BalCCon2k15

https://2k15.balccon.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

again pop in if you are there.

Sincerely for Food Hacking Base,

Frantisek

PS If you plan to hang around Food Hacking Base village at the camp
please do sign in through your CCC wiki account adding yourself as Food
Hacking Base member (you can be member of more villages of course), more
people will grant us more space ... More info about our village is below

I think Noisebridge as an educational space could be a great fit, and I

We've already been nominated by someone, and so we have until July 23rd

$100k is a lot of money to put into Noisebridge, and it warrants new Big

achieve with $100k over 3-4 years? An awesome, fully kitted out

MongoDB posted:

Hello All,

I am a Software Engineer at MongoDB, a NoSQL database company. MongoDB likes to keep in touch with the engineering community by having drop-in question-and-answer sessions at our office in Palo Alto. There are called Office Hours and are an very informal way for users to come discuss their questions with MongoDB engineers, 1-on1. Palo Alto is a bit of a journey for our SF based users, so I'd like to start doing some at San Francisco and thought Noisebridge could be a great place to do it.

We usually announce on Twitter that we'll be available at the venue and typically expect about 10 to 12 people to drop in on average. Anyone with questions about MongoDB are welcome. I'd like to start the first "office hours" Thursday the 23rd, from 4-6 PM. Do you feel that Noisebridge is an appropriate please to host these small meetups?

many thanks,
Bryan

Praveen posted:

As MongoDB is a for-profit corporation, I'd personally like to see some way for MongoDB to give back to the community. Noisebridge cannot charge for space in kind, although donating to noisebridge would be appreciated. Has MongoDB thought about anti-gentrifcation efforts or low income/minority/community education efforts?

Garrett posted:

I think that it's doocratic in the spirit of Noisebridge. You'll need to chec the schedule for room availability of Turing or Church before booking your room by editing the wiki.

Praveen posted:

I vehemently disagree -- MongoDB is a for profit company that would otherwise pay top dollar to have real estate to run where it can get mindshare for other engineers. While I support noisebridge to support our own community members to launch their for profit projects (for example, mitch altman pitching his electronics), it's frankly because of companies like MongoDB getting a free ride from the city that not only is Noisebridge's rent going up, but everyone in the neighborhood getting kicked out as well.

Noisebridge it /community/ space - so I really have ask, what concrete value does MongoDB add to this community? Why not give Microsoft or Apple free space to develop mindshare in our community?

We may need cash, and once again our non-profit status does not allow us to have in-kind donations. But, if you really want to play ball with these companies, we better make our benefit very tangible and make it a lot. MongoDB would otherwise pay thousands if not tens of thousands to have a deal somewhere else in the city. We are a premium spot for it, and we should make it such that even the poorest and most unconnected of us are able to benefit from it.

2011PIguppy2011 posted:

As far as I am concerned, free office hours are just that. I don't see the point in injecting SF city politics / hot button issues into this and I see it as blatant trolling. Noisebridge is not a political nonprofit.

It would be great to have more responsible people in the space at a regular time using it to hack on tech. He said it was open office hours for whoever.

Bryan posted:

Hi everyone,

I realize "Office Hours" is a bit confusing name. It's just an opportunity for anyone who has questions about MongoDB to get some one on one time with an engineer. The name office hours comes from the idea of having scheduled times that college professors where in-office and available for students to ask questions. People come to these session with questions at all levels of experience. Sometimes we talk about application design, sometimes distributed systems, sometimes the NoSQL ecosystem. There's no agenda or sales pitch. Just a desire to help users with the database.

Personally, I really enjoy partcipating in these Q&A session since I love sharing knowledge and helping people understand technology. Plus, as knowledge sharing is a two way street, I learn new things from other engineers by working in this collaborative fashion. One of my favorite experiences was helping a neuroscientist white-board a data processing architecture for his research in Parkinson's Disease.

I also believe in the powers of cross-polinated technology, and think having these Q&A sessions a Noisebridge would foster interesting connections. I am a DIYer myself, with an Arduino, Rasberry Pi and a CNC project in progress. You can get an idea of who I am from the projects in my blog, http://bryanreinero.com/ . The project I'm most proud of is here http://bryanreinero.com/camera-cranes/

MongoDB is an open source database, free to download here: https://www.mongodb.org/. We also provide free online courses for everyone https://university.mongodb.com/. I'm happy to come to the meeting on Tuesday, introduce myself and answer any questions.

thanks,
Bryan

Praveen posted:

The fact remains that you are wanting to use a commons space to develop for-profit MongoDB markets at no cost to you, while your company is intaking hand over first capital, while the noisebridge community foots the bill for our rather expensive per square foot rent.

If I can't make it to consensus tonight, I ask the nb community to seriously consider the trade-offs of corporate colonization. We have the brains in this community, we are the ones with the tech talent here with or without corporate backing. Our community has problems, our community has temporary funding issues, but we can solve them without giving these reps a free pass.

If we do let them do their "office hours" (market development) in our space, then we really need to consider if we are really going to be helped by this. We also need to consider that MongoDB raised almost a quarter billion in capital over the past 2 years, and 80 million this year alone.

If we are going to bring corporations in, let's have some discipline, get a good rate, and bring in competitors. Play them before they play us.

The issues of giving corporate free passes is centrally linked to very
real gentrification issues, inside and outside noisebridge.

Inside noisebridge:
  - we still don't have disabled or elderly accessible environments
even after years of being here. Our members with accessibility issues
often have to go to great struggles to figure out if they can be at the
space.
   - we are still a monolingual environment, with our wiki being
english only inside a strong bilingual community

The list can go on about noisebridge and the immediate neighborhood,
like providing mesh access to the low income in the community.

Having cash to do such things, beyond worrying about basic rent is of
immense value.

And yet we have actors like Jehan privileging free access to a cash
heavy corporation because they use the AGPL in their product. It's
very admirable that a company should do such a thing, but by that logic
would you invite Oracle in to give demos because Mysql is open source?Â
Preposterous. Â

Noisebridge is not broken. Our job is not to attract wealth people
from far away places like palo alto. We have value inside our own
communities, in Noisebridge, in the Mission, that we have to develop and
emerge to be next cutting edge. Â

In so far as politics at noisebridge -- I'm sorry but NB is an
explicitly political space. We host and talk about issues that are of
importance to hackers that include digital rights, free internet, and
yes gentrification and tech class divide in urban areas like the mission
district. If you feel differently, I welcome you to shut down Techno
Activism Tuesdays and the many other projects we've hosted here.
