CobiWann posted:Three pages AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE REAL ANSWER IS?!? A simple internet search posted:The thing that starts with "H" and means you will always be the bridesmaid and never the bride is 'halitosis'. However, it does not actually exist. It was invented by Lambert Pharmacia, the makers of Listerine, so that they could sell mouthwash. Listerine, which is named after Joseph Lister, inventor of antiseptics, was originally sold as an antiseptic, but then without changing the formula the company began selling it as a substance for washing floors, a cure for gonorrhoea, and then as a mouthwash. As it was the first ever mouthwash, they decided to invent the idea of halitosis to shift Listerine, and it worked, expanding the size of their company greatly.

Screenshots and clips of QI look fine and all but just about every good zinger joke looks so obviously scripted. Just everytime I see something from it I think "FAAAAKE" I've never watched the show. CaptBushido has a new favorite as of 05:19 on Jul 16, 2015 |

Wikipedia posted:Contrary to the popular belief, also raised on QI, that Listerine coined the term halitosis, it actually dates from the 1870s,[34] although it only became commonly used in the 1920s when a marketing campaign promoted Listerine as a solution for "chronic halitosis". The company was the first to manufacture mouth washes in the United States. According to Freakonomics: I don't know what simple internet whatevers to believe anymore

Here's a tip - if someone is trying to tell you that bad breath is not a thing, odds are they smell like a rat crawled into their mouth and died. Even then, mouthwash from a century ago bears no relation to the formulations used today.

I have to keep reminding myself that panel based comedy shows are such an alien concept to some americans. Another tip - they aren't really playing for points.
