I had a ticket sent to us on Friday where a guy couldn't send emails from another address, they would go to his drafts folder. We determined it to be user error so I emailed the guy asking when a good time he'd be available to chat/talk/maybe screen share about it to see if we could figure out what was happening. Yesterday we get an update from the helpdesk where the guy emailed them, said he hadn't heard from anyone at all on the issue and wanted a status update because it was VERY IMPORTANT. It made me angry because I had in fact contacted him and was completely ignored. One of the other guys then looked at it and determined it to definitely be user error and closed it. In the grand scheme of things it's entirely insignificant, but come on dude.

I call and leave a message with a real person asking her to call me, then call back an hour later and leave a VM. My Account Manager gets a nasty e-mail about how "this needs to be resolved TODAY and why hasn't anybody e-mailed me about resolution?!" So yes, they were mad that I didn't e-mail them about their problem of being unable to use e-mail.

We get people sending in second tickets for the same issue which is waiting for a response all the time. Most recently, I think they might have been trying to find someone to give them a different answer. They want to be logged on to an RDP server twice with the same account on different computers. I told them that wasn't possible, but with some information I could make a new account for whoever would be using that second computer. Later that day, I see a ticket about the same thing in my co-worker's queue, they sent it straight to him by name. I get his permission to take it, merge it, and politely tell them I would be glad to help them with either of the two options I gave before.

Malvertising has been a thing for years primarily piggybacking on flash and Java, it just wasn't as noticeable pre-CryptoLocker. And honestly how 100% dead sure are you that one specific email was the first vector, and that they weren't separately infected when they visited facebook, and that dating site, and from their Limewire downloads, etc.

I don't expect a substantive response anytime soon. I fully expect to get rejected. I fully expect that they won't counter-offer. If I threaten to quit they'll probably concoct a reason to terminate me for cause thus denying unemployment. As much as I'd like to be gone from here and job hunt full-time I would very much like to not utilize my savings to exist until another job transpires, or risk being unemployed in this economy. If you threaten to quit they'll just ask you to write a resignation letter to make it nice and tidy to deny you unemployment. Unless the business will ACTUALLY fail within a week if you leave, they'll just replace you with an MSP until they're bought out.

But the more recent infections didn't come through email (that was the first place we checked), they were definitely through browsing. We have been able to restore from shadowcopies.

I've had decent luck with rolling out Google Chrome with Adblock Plus via GPO, then using whatever filtering is available to block additional sites/IPs. Hell, even if there's no specific filter, you can hop into DNS and basically create loopback addresses to the IPs of sites like Facebook/Myspace and other sites so they can't be accessed. It's helped quite a bit, only thing we use IE for is sites that require it, which are slimming down more and more nowadays.

I've been battling the "don't even bother, nothing will happen and you over-expose yourself to risk" bug that's been making me think I shouldn't do it, but getting some reinforcement is a good thing. I did think it over and I don't think it's in my best interest to go in there with a number. If I go in asking for what I think I'm worth - my salary plus the salary-only bare minimum $40k a helpdesk person could make - they'll probably laugh me out and fire me. If I go in with my reports from Zendesk on the quantitative side, and reminding them that this was supposed to be temporary on the human side, and ask them to take stock of the value I add and increase my salary accordingly, I can at least counter-offer if they even come up with something.

After you show them all the extra work you are taking try to get them to name a number first if you can, that way you can try to work your way up to a higher salary. Really though it sounds like this job is more an issue with workload and stress than your pay. You might have some luck negotiating a couple extra weeks PTO or something to if they cant/wont budge on pay. And if it comes down to a choice between your mental health and sanity and the job don't be afraid to walk IF you can afford to. No use rage quitting then having to worry about putting food on the table. Just replacing stress with a different kind of stress,

Lol when I went asking for more money I forgot about the "What's the number it would take to get you to stay?", specifically the "get you to stay" part and so I forgot that I was making them nervous when I was taking my time. To me, if they didn't match It's not like I was going to leave immediately, but I wasn't going to stick around for long. Looking back, they may have thought I would leave immediately.
