I would guess it's because somebody placed it there while the cats were eating and when they turn around there's this weird thing that wasn't there before. To be fair I'd react similarly if I turned around after using the ATM to find a giant pumpkin that wasn't there before. E: exactly what I was going to say.

When I was about 9-10 years old, I spent a long time trying to catch a red legged frog. After roughly 20 minutes, I succeeded and held it until it let out a long high pitched scream. I stared at it for a few seconds and slowly put it down.
