Anyone know of any bands that have a darker, grittier, modern funk sound? I've really been enjoying To Pimp a Butterfly and I'd love a whole album with a vibe along the lines of Wesley's Theory or King Kunta. Something more aggressive and intense than bands like Parliament usually were, but with those funky basslines.

If you want more of that sound, go to the source and check out Thundercat and Terrace Martin, who played bass on and produced large chunks of TPAB respectively. Their music generally doesn't bang as hard as Kendrick's stuff does, but its good sounding modern funk in largely the same style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQTzVYHKj1U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nq3Ls6kzeE (NSFW)

Both of them sound pretty good; I'm looking forward to listening to more tracks by them. If only there was more aggressive funk stuff. Looking around myself, I really couldn't find much, although I did get inspired to listen to Fishbone again.

This is a weird request, but do you know anything that sounds similar to how the intro to this sounds? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1RzBsN3peY It's nice and weirdly relaxing and I don't really know what the style is. It's like super old school country or something.

Looking for a couple different recommendations. First, looking for groups with a sound similar to the one Metric (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLNhzxoTJBQ) and Shiny Toy Guns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv3RVVi8Zrk) have. Then I'm also looking for stuff similar to Scavenger Hunt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gyodifrnl3I)

So I saw this car insurance commercial with babies in it. The commercial featured this song with some really fetching, 1950s-sounding, plangent guitar. I loved the song, which is "Love is Strange" by Mickey and Sylvia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LDpI063qBA I'm pretty much looking for stuff that sounds like that. Bonus points for songs with pop sensibility. Bonus points for being 1950s. But really anything that sounds anything like "Love is Strange" would be cool. Thanks.

Not a big fan of folk punk, but I love anti-police/fascist rhetoric and songs about killing Police Officers. I know the classics like Leftover Crack, Against Me, and Modest Mouse, but Im looking to expand my horizons on this front, so to speak, if anyone has a few recs that would be chill.

I'm assuming you've listened to Choking Victim, the band that would become Leftover Crack. If not, listen to their only album No Gods, No Managers. Andrew Jackson Jihad: start with Candy Cigarettes & Cap Guns and People That Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World Then there's Gogol Bordello. Start with the album Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony.

My dad really likes the kind of music that played in Cream in the 90s. So like, Paul Oakenfold's Goa mix, John of the Pleased Wimmin, Sasha, that kind of thing. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have any recommendations for modern stuff that you think he might be able to get into? Or maybe a selection of tracks that aren't necessarily so close to that style you still think are really good and I'll just make him a mix tape and then see what he likes/doesn't like. I don't think he's listened to anything new since 1999.

I don't think he's listened to anything new since 1999. Given that you cited Goa Mix instead of Oakenfold's later 90s anthemic trance club mixes, Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise albums might fit the bill. You mentioned Sasha but does he already have Sasha + Digweed's joint albums, because they're pretty great (especially Renaissance, which along with Goa Mix essentially defined early/mid 90s trance. Like Goa Mix, it was out of print for ages and so he might not have a copy). If he does like the anthemic vocal stuff, Tiesto's Club Life series will be a good fit (although really, anthemic vocal trance peaked in the late 90s and current stuff just doesn't match up imo) as well as his album Elements of Life. And deadmau5 and Eric Prydz (recommended to me in this thread) have stuff that fits into both categories and is very melody-based, very easy to get into and enjoy. Some tracks you can try out are (for deadmau5) Strobe, Some Chords, Animal Rights, (for Eric Prydz) Allein, Shadows, Europa. If he's not familiar with Juno Reactor, that might be interesting to get him into. Their first two albums are very much in the Goa Mix vein - straightforward psytrance stuff, with their second album Beyond the Infinite being a classic psytrance album, but then starts to get more adventurous with each subsequent album. You and he will certainly recognize a couple of their tracks from the later Matrix films. A short tracklist that highlights their evolution would be High Energy Protons (original mix) - Ice Cube - God is God - Pistolero - Mona Lisa Overdrive - Immaculate Conception. regulargonzalez fucked around with this message at 14:25 on Jul 28, 2015 |

I generally listen to music an album at a time, I'm not a huge hiphop (rap?) person but I've recently worn out Black on Both Sides by Mos Def. The only other rap (hiphop?) album I own is The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest. Can someone recommend me something like those albums by a different artist / group (I can always come back to Tribe or Mos Def later, and probably will)?
