I hope someday JRPGs return to when they were generally well paced and not overly grindy or filled with extraneous poo poo. I don't want 80 hour Tales games or Persona's social links and whatever. Just give me a nice, tight 20 or so hour JRPG with some unique mechanics that don't overstay their welcome or need some guide for making god use of.

atlus is a p. good jrpg company that makes games for a wide range of people in terms of tone and difficulty and it makes me lol when people get mad that they don't make games exclusively for one kind of audience

Actually, I'd say Nocturne is a shoe-in for people looking for a leaner, meaner JRPG experience.

Bad Seafood posted:Nocturne is still peak mainline SMT for me. I wouldn't say no to V, but IV felt like a definite step down from its predecessor, so I'm a little shaky on the future of the core franchise. SMT IV is my favourite but I understand where the complaints about it are coming from. It's a shame my PS3 broke and I don't have anything to play Nocturne on. I love the whole win fast or die even faster thing SMT IV has going for it.

I agree that ~20-30 hours is a generally good max length for games though. there are exceptions, but generally when you see a game advertise that it has 80 or 200 or a billion hours of gameplay there's no loving way that a good chunk of those hours are actually fun or enjoyable
