I went to an NWA New Jersey show back in 2001 which featured Chris Candido, Steve Corino, Lil Guido, a bunch of other former ECW guys and Virgil/Vince. Virgil had his table setup from just about as soon as the doors opened. The promoted had to go, drag him away from his table when the matches started. Then the main event became Corino Vs Candido. Just as they were about to start, the nWo music starts playing and Virgil comes out and says "you weren't going to have the main event without me!". Corino and Candido put on a great match, while every once and a while Virgil would go over to one of them, get punched, roll outside the ring and lay down for a while, rinse and repeat. The match lasted a good 15 minutes and Virgil did the absolute bare minimum. Virgil also spent intermission in the ring, largely being ignored by everyone as Candido and Corino had huge lines. Also everyone working on the show had those "Rumors of our demise have been greatly exaggerated" NWA t-shirts, which I always found ridiculous.

I just remembered one of the all-time dumbest things I've seen in wrestling: The WCW/MTV Ultimate Video Bash. Airing in the middle of the day on a weekend in 1998, the live event was a tournament where wrestlers represented music videos. They would come out and one of two things would happen. Either they would have a match to decide which video advanced or they would have the fans at home vote via 900 number. Unfortunately, it was outside and raining heavily. We would only get one wrestling match in the very beginning. High Voltage (representing "Gettin' Jiggy with It" by Will Smith) vs. Public Enemy (representing "Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J) Listen to that High Voltage promo. Listen to it. Sadly, the rest of the show isn't uploaded. With it deemed too dangerous to have wrestling matches in the rain, the three-hour special got chopped down to two and it was nothing but wrestlers coming out and talking up their pet music videos. You had Barry Darsow coming out to explain why the fans at home should call up and vote for Run DMC. That happened. The show ended with DDP vs. Raven, only Raven sent Kidman out to represent him. DDP proceeded to win and got in a brawl with Raven to send the fans home happy. DDP represented Van Halen's "Without You." So WCW and MTV's big tournament ended with motherfucking Gary Cherone Van Halen winning and that in itself is the dumbest thing.

Back in the day, networks would occasionally do an hour-long special based on hyping up the upcoming fall Saturday morning cartoon lineup. In 1985, back when Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling was about to hit the scene, they did a special where Herve Villechaize was supposed to host a talk show, but Roddy Piper stole it away from him and locked him out of the studio or something. The announcer is Gary Owens (the original Space Ghost) and the guests include Patti LaBelle, Pee-Wee Herman, New Edition and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, while Captain Lou and Cyndi Lauper also show up. So if you're interested in seeing heel Piper play off Pee-Wee, this is for you. The whole thing is a trip.

In point of fact the Canadian crowd loved it whenever Rougeau restarted the match even though Storm lost clean in the middle of the ring 4 times. And then Bret Hart came out and hugged them both, approving of Lance's dishonesty and lack of wrestling skill. The nationalism was frankly disgusting; if Dr. Charlie Manson von Haterape was Canadian and ate a baby in the ring, he'd get a giant face pop in Canada. I'd say Russo intentionally booked the match so the crowd would make fools of themselves cheering the heel for perpetrating a massive screwjob, but I think that was utterly incidental and Vince had no clue this would happen.

You're right, though, it was silly of me to say "Why not go dead for the stupid match that makes Lance Storm look like poo poo?" Of course he gets giant babyface hero pops for losing and heeling, he's from the same country as the other people in the crowd (and not even the same province, just the same country in general)

Everything in this thread is stupid. The MOST stupid, and in fact the angriest I'll ever get at a wrestling angle, was the Secret Raw GM. It lasted more than a year, from June 21, 2010 to July 18, 2011, and was called back July 9, 2012. For MONTHS, there was a secret tweener GM. Months and months, with Cole interrupting matches to announce matches, rematches, etc etc etc. People got jumped; Bret Hart was fired; Hornswoggle was attacked; the Nexus was supported and thwarted. Edge feuded with it and smashed a laptop to turn face (leading to his final WHC run with the company). No resolution, for months. Until a random RAW, when they say they were going to unmask the Anonymous GM. Santino comes to the ring... [and realize that the mystery has gone on for TWO loving YEARS. More than 100 episodes of Raw.] and announces... it's Hornswoggle. Now, wrestling may have been dumb in a segment, but this dumb in more than a hundred segments.
