So Ban goes on a quest looking for that waiter. Who disappeared ten years ago, and might not be alive anymore (yes, this gets pointed out).

First stop is a restaurant the waiter worked at. Ban and the friend who goes with him get locked into the kitchen where they are confronted by the kitchen staff: "Tell us where the legendary waiter is or we'll kill the both of you! We got a bone to pick with this guy, since he left our restaurant has been struggling and he hosed the head chef's wife!"

They have to fight their way out, and barely make it.

I'm actually somewhat suspicious since this work seems heavily inspired by the ellusive Shirow Masamune, yet is also on par with it.

There's also some Tsutomu Nihei influence since the author worked as his assistant for a while.

It's just on a really boring story arc that instead of concluding just keeps taking turns making Ban and the other characters do irrational / dumb things. It could actually get a lot better if they just moved on with the story and stopped floundering with this arc.

Bambino, the first manga is pretty cool and good outside of going a bit off the rails right at the end.

This sequel we're talking about is pretty terrible, top to bottom.

pentyne

Bambino become hot steaming garbage near the end of its run (the New York arc) and the sequel is just an excuse for the author to spout some horrific racism.

Remember the lovely pasta chef who attacked and key-stabbed Ban? And Ban completely refused to say anything about it to the bosses but still fantasied about the owner coming in, tasting Ban's food and lovely chef's food, then firing lovely chef on the spot?

Yeah, the entire thing has been a mess from the start and it's almost impossible to parse the insanity. World Expert food critic berating Ban for his stalker behavior then posing a challenge to him had some potential for a "there's a wider world you're not seeing" but that was quickly squashed so the series turns into a "this magical person is the solution to our problems, lets roll out!"

I'll give the writer some credit, Ban's idiocy was on full display as the spoke to him face to face and more or less told him to say what was going on but then Ban's plan to "out-cook" the psycho would be ruined.

Yeah but that's just the good stuff, not the GOOD good stuff.

The cliche Bro move would be Natsuo spots him -> mental block into getting beaten up -> either psychological breakthrough or crushing loss. Hopefully it'll bring something original!

E: Also the series has apparently finished which makes me sad. Still so much that could be done here, while so many other series churn out material years and years past their expiration date. Oh well.

I just caught up with Dorohedoro and man is it awesome, though every time I start reading it again I've forgotten some of what's happened before, and then by the time I get finished with the newly released bundle of chapters I can mostly remember what was going on, but then I'll run out and the cycle will repeat. Some time I'll have to do a reread of the whole series to enjoy it again and remember all the details.

Also being a devil in Dorohedoro seems amazing, but the worst thing is how a person can get their devil powers taken away and go back to just being a magic user. Having magic is already pretty great, but being a devil just takes the person outside of the laws of the world to where everything becomes entertainment. It's especially clear in recent chapters where all the main character's struggles are being viewed by a bunch of devils drinking beer and eating, treating the main events in the manga as a spectacle. The fact that events might be radically changed because one devil dropped his beer by accident is hilarious, in a "we are all at the whims of total coincidence" kinda way. .

Naikado is interesting as a sort half-devil right now who still sorta understands what it's like the be human, but doesn't seem to have much emotions anymore other than mild shock. Her facial expression makes it seem like devils are kinda euphoric all the time.

Meanwhile, being a human in the Dorohedoro world totally sucks. Unless you're a genius doctor dating a devil. That guy has incredible luck.

Don't read Dorohedoro fast, just take your time and look at something other than the text bubbles occasionally, like the great architectural art, and the creative points of the character designs (the masks)

I don't know how long it took me to read Dorohedoro the first time. It's been a few years since I started it. But once I finish all the current chapters I wait until there's another batch, which usually takes half a year.

I agree that the world feels a bit small. Hole just seems to be one city, and En and his gang manage to rule over all of "magic user land". But honestly, the series is so goddamn weird that the small world size doesn't bother me. There's enough to absorb in that small space.

It probably is a pretty small world. Hole might really just be that one city, and it's believable that Chidaruma is fickle enough to not bother creating a whole lot of places in the world of magic users.

There is definitely another city because the main characters visit someone who had been a victim of a magic user in another city iirc. Its a minor complaint really

I'm rereading Dorohedoro and they mention the mansion that they go to in volume 3 has had its space warped by magic, just like Hole. So maybe Hole was part of the rest of the world until it was warped by magic, and now Hole and the cities around it are cut off from the rest of the world.

There's new Immortal Hounds, but I think I'm about done with the manga. The past five or six chapters have had a real mean-spirited edge to them. The violence, while always gory, has always been either comedic or cathartic, but now it just feels cruel. It's everything I hated about that edgy shitpile Ajin.

I maintain that making the Escape Artists immortal really takes away from the interesting part of the pitch. In the beginning, they had better tech and training than their regenerating opponents, but they still felt vulnerable. Now that it's clear that there were never any stakes in the earlier violence, it makes it feel a bit pointless.

I also stumbled across Terrarium in Drawer, which is loving fantastic. It's a series of short whimsical tales, with a lighthearted surrealism to them. It's good poo poo.
