FINE-LYYYYYYYYYY. THE DJ HAS COME BACK, TO... well, review Royal Dornoch Royal Dornoch will celebrate 400 years of golf in 2016. Think about that. This is an extremely popular course, and for good reason. It basically throws a little bit of everything at you. It is a straightforward "out and back" course located on the Dornoch Firth and offers some amazing views. It also has some of the 'ruffle' that Castle Stuart does, but isn't as heavy on it as it is CROWNED FUCKIN' GREENS. Of the 3 courses, these greens were the slowest, but also pretty hard so god help you if you wanted anything to check up. It's not happening. Let's talk about how to get on a crowned, raised green from like 45-60 yards out. You basically have 4 options:
I really really like option 4 after working it fairly well on a few of them. Putters are tough to get a good pace when you aren't used to smashing the ball with it. Lob wedges are very easy to blade under the ball and do nothing (God bless you if you can hit lob wedges well, goddamn I cannot at all). Sand-based courses aren't going to let anything check up so the pitching wedge is kinda out as well, especially when the green is elevated. Punching the ball into the hill seems so weird to me but drat if it doesn't work great almost every time. It in no way is a good-looking shot but it is really effective. This deserves its own line. Royal Dornoch has 2 holes where your ball almost falls down a cliffside to continue on, what the poo poo. If I had to be disappointed by anything, it was surprising to see a pro shop at such a prestigious course look only slighly better than what you'd find at your local muni. Also no locker rooms, changing rooms, etc, which is pretty disappointing as well. Staff vary from polite to dismissive. Still, overall this is really worth your time to visit because the course itself is a hoot. PICTURE DUMP Can you find my ball? THE CARD I had a great start and then things went a bit nutty. If you've played Pete Dye courses, you're going to recognize something here: Royal Dornoch loooooooooovvvvves itself some short par 4s. Granted, this depends entirely on the weather, and we had another calm day. That helped matters but goddamn I was all over the map with these greens. Still, lot of fun and if I could have dialed things in a bit more I would have broken 90. Tomorrow! Finally I get to sleep in a bit, and I'll probably spend most of the day on the practice range and maybe get a lesson as well.

I don't normally even carry a 3i, and in fact, I didn't even hit this 3i on the course until yesterday. I've left it in the closet for easier to hit hybrids. I'm thinking of trying a new wedge setup or maybe I just need different clubs or to work on my swing with them. My j40 PW is 46 degrees and is my stock 130-135 club with either a draw or a straight flight. Then I have a 52 degree Vokey SM4 and 58 degree SM5 and they both are giving me pulls and weak fades lately when I take full swings. I plan on going to a driving range later this week and just hitting my wedges to try and figure out what's different. Right now the 52 goes like 110-115 yards and the 58 is maybe 90, but there's more variance with them than I can tolerate. I've only got 13 clubs in my bag so even if I do start hitting them better I still might get a 50 and 54 or maybe 50/55/60 or something. It's really strange to prefer having 150 yards into a green rather than 100 but that's where I'm at right now. I've got a few tournaments and outings planned for later this month and August so I'm feeling some pressure to get this sorted asap.

Didn't see this post, so ignore my post in the Open thread. Nice round! Did you play from the blues or blacks? I think there's a lot of scoring opportunities out there if you play the blues, but the blacks make it a much tougher course to score on(the par 4's become a lot longer, #5, #10, #12 and #18 mainly). I would agree with you on the course conditions. I understand not putting a lot of plush sand in the waste bunkers, but just adding some sand to the bunkers that you actually might hit the ball into would mean a lot. And DEFINITELY agree on the greens, they don't keep them super fast although they do speed them up a lot for tournaments and I wish they would keep them that fast all year, I putt a lot better on fast greens. Let me know if you want to get out soon, if you put up -3 you'd kick my rear end, but that's alright! We can play for a beer.

Funny enough I hit 6i off 1 tee, and (thought) I bladed my wedge approach. Got lucky since the green slopes back to front and ended up 3' from the hole. Shot a -2 today, which wasn't even the best round of the day. I played with an 87 year old who shot a 79. Greatest round I've probably ever seen in person. Guy hit EVERY fairway, linked it up close to the green on most of the 4s, and then chipped and putted for par a few times. He was in awe of my shots, I was in awe of his whole game. Made the afternoon round something special for sure.

Swing weight balanced all my clubs today, after I re-gripped them. 5 grams between clubs, .5 swing weights between clubs, 1/2" length stepping. Maintained a constant balance point ratio between every club. Just got back from the range. Made a couple adjustments. Went too heavy on my 4 & 5 irons. Feels good man. Just in time to play 18 tomorrow morning in the SoCal rain. The greens are gonna be so slow, i can't wait

With an 8i

THE DJEXILE RECAP OF A FULL WEEK OF GOLF IN SCOTLAND THAT PROBABLY NOBODY CARES ABOUT BUT OH WELL This trip did loads to improve my game. Granted, it's hard not to when you spend an honest to god entire week playing nothing but golf. Here's a whole bunch of condensed thoughts. MY GAME I know the cards don't always show it (gently caress yooouuuu 30+ MPH cross winds), but I got far better off the tee than I've been in years. I've redeveloped trust in my driver and a lot of that comes from shortening my backswing and going smooth through the ball. My short game took enormous strides. A good 30 minute lesson got my lob wedge game far stronger, when using it to pop over bunkers to close pins, and for small chips from off the fringe. My 9 iron might as well be sending lawn darts from about 135 yards now too and god it's so much fun. My putter has been improving as well, and I'm doing better and better at keeping 3-putts off my cards. A few happened in Scotland because there are some goddamn gigantic greens over there, but I'm happier with how I'm reading greens and keeping a more consistent pace. The biggest improvement had to be in my mental game. I can be a very competitive/self-criticizing guy at times and it's common for me to get off my game when I go sailing into the long grass, but I wound up getting better and better at getting out of it and saving myself, so I have much less of the "UGGGGGGGH goddamnit stop hitting it in there you dingus" thoughts. THE COURSES Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle is one of the best rated courses in Scotland (maybe in the UK as a whole), and for a lot of good reasons. The staff is phenomenal, the locker room is gorgeous and includes a big screen TV, leather couches and chairs, and even a steam room! Bottled water, Coke, some kind of Gatorade-like drink (I forget the name, slim blue bottle, ended in "___ade" I think? LIttle help, UK goons?) and candy are all complimentary. Granted, they should be for the money it costs to stay and/or play there. This is not an easy course but it is a fair course. Greens are extremely firm and quick, and 3-4 have suffered some sort of disease that they're currently treating, which is a shame. Great views of the Dornoch Firth from a number of holes as well. Lots of fairway bunkers right around the 200-250 range from the tee. Royal Dornoch might be the closest you can get to traditional, old school links golf outside of the Old Course at St. Andrews. How you play here depends entirely on the weather, specifically the wind. There is nothing blocking the wind, and short par 4s become almost par 5s if it's bad. Crowned greens are tough as hell and will really make you think about how you want to approach them, to the point where you honestly have to think about how you're going to hit up to your approach shot area. Greens were slow but fair. Facilities are a serious let-down. No locker/changing rooms. Pro shop is on par with your local muni. Food in their restaurant is basically burgers and dogs. This isn't the biggest problem in the grand scheme of things, but it's pretty disappointing when you're forking over some serious cash to play there. Still, the golf is great and I really understand its popularity having now played it. Castle Stuart is still far and away my favorite course in the world. It's a course where par 4s and 5s seem to increase in difficulty as you go from tee to green. Most landing areas off the tee are pretty forgiving, but approaches can be really tough. #18 is a par 5 that's reachable in 2, but you will get destroyed if you lose it to the right. This course is only 7 years old and they're already so popular that they've hosted 2 Scottish Opens (they'll host third in 2016) and about to break ground ground on an entire second course. Think about that for a second. These were the best greens of the 3 courses, without question. The facilities are wonderful. The caddies are great. Go play this loving course immediately. MY CLUBS/GEAR These courses reaffirmed my love of the Callaway Diablo Tour balls. They're a slightly harder Bridgestone E5 or Titlist NXT, in my experience, and that's a nice sweet spot for me. I'm really glad you can still find them in like 2-for-$35 deals in Dicks and a few other places, and I'm going to get a couple more dozen now. Everyone go buy a pair of Footjoy Rain Grip gloves immediately and keep them in your bag. These were a great help when the skies opened up, and keeping my typical non-glove hand from getting cold in wet and windy conditions was very nice. They don't hold as tight to your hand/fingers as traditional golf gloves but I liked them. On the subject of gloves, man I love the Callaway X-SPANN glove. Gloves with the traditional fold-over velcro thing always seem to fit me just a bit wrong, and these still seem to be around on Amazon, even if Callaway stopped making them. Sweet. My iron game has been improving well, but man I need to get a lesson on how to hit hybrids well. Gonna get my 20 degree looked at for some repairs, and maybe send it back to Ping, it's wiggled loose a bit where the shaft meets the head. [penis joke here]. Still hitting the 4wood really well off the deck on the tee. They're far more popular as a brand in Europe (or at least the UK) than they are here in the states, but holy hell everyone go out and get some Galvin Green raingear. It's not cheap but it holds well to the body and their soft shell windstoppers are phenomenal. They maintain their water-beading really well (I think some of their products are Gore-Tex now, too) and don't have that annoying loose buffeting sound when the wind is blowing. Under Armour's "Storm" line is also really worth the money. If you don't like UA's pricing on their pants, Lee has made some synthetic material chinos that feel very similar and still bend/flex with you very well. I found a couple pairs at JC Penney for around half the price of Under Armour. Still really love my Footjoy Superlites, and wow having really lightweight shoes when walking a course makes a world of a difference. That said, they aren't waterproof so you'll want something more significant on misty/rainy days. The Nike Lunar Command shoes were pretty comfortable and had great waterproofing, but your feet definitely wear down more after walking in them for 18 holes. Overall I think people would be well advised to have a couple different pairs of shoes to use, depending on the conditions. Good lord my Ogio Grom holds drat near everything, but it is not light, and I'm going to find a lighter bag for carry soon. Still, the Grom isn't the heaviest bag ever and I'm going to get the leg repaired quickly to keep it in use. One more picture/card dump coming soon.
