Obviously the correct response would be, "No he is not, and it would not matter if he was." And to his credit, McCain got halfway there. So "at best he enabled it" is a good way to put it.

It was fascinating to see him in that moment of realizing how far the right-wing hate machine had gone off the rails though.

Something Awful, so easy even a spaceman can do it!

In regards to conspiracy theories: I had a student several years ago that was big, BIG into conspiracy theories. He even tried to show me during lunch about how jet fuel cannot melt steel beams and how this video totally shows that it was thermite. I tried to explain to him rationally and I focused on motivation as the main tactic. "What would this gain those doing the conspiracy." But nothing ever reached him.

One day, we were waiting to switch classes and the student brought up conspiracies about JFK's assassination. I told him about how the one that I thought was most likely was how Starbucks killed JFK. I spun a web of complete bullshit and afterwards, he just shook his head agreeing with me and said "I never thought of them before." When I told him that I had made it all up right then and there, it looked like I broke his mind.

Sometimes, the best way to handle conspiracy theories is to out crazy the theorist.

That's a tactic many Skeptics have suggested in dealing with CTs. With 9/11 you have such a huge choice in what theories you want to spit out. Someone claiming that thermite brought the buildings down, you counter that it was space lasers that brough them down and the planes were holograms. As long as its something that refutes the official story, they'll accept it. They're more interested in showing that they know "the truth man!" and show how they're awake and not like the sheeple they'll accept anything.

I don't think Cts are right or left wing, their crazy is pretty much the same but they come about it in different ways, but the end result is the same.

MTHEL chemical lasers shot from the Pentagon, with a Boeing AWACS plane using a decoy camo system to simulate the planes hitting the tower.

As long as the times refuse to change, we're going to make a hell of a racket.
It's hard to explain to people how shady and shadowy the Bush administration felt at the time. I was younger, so I have an excuse, and hey, the crazies turned out to be right about the government using cell phones to collect data on people. I remember when suggesting the NSA was collecting information via cell networks was largely regarded as conspiracy theory territory. It would literally get you laughed out of D&D.

September 11th happened, and then all of a sudden, two years later, we found ourselves at war with Iraq over some really shoddy pretenses. It was obvious that there was an ulterior motive. Except later when it was revealed that no, Bush and his cohorts were really dumb enough to think that invading and toppling Saddam would literally be enough for these people to adopt representative democracy and then vote to let Halliburton handle all Iraqi oil in perpetuity. I think a lot of people couldn't bring themselves to realize that the neocons were simply a group of people with disastrous policies and goals who intended to stick with them regardless of the damage to society. There were other things about the Bush administration that were shady, like the high level business associations (no-bid contracts for the VPs former company) and the elections themselves. Someone realized that in fact, two can play at this game, and now there are tons of 'right-wing' conspiracy theories, the most prominent being that global warming is a hoax.

So far we have heard this, the afterburner, being a lovely pilot for being shot down, cowardice and what not. All in this forum.

He was shot down over a high risk SAM-area on a combat flight. He was by far not the only person on Forrestal alone to have crashed multiple aircraft. He endured half a decade of torture and opted to stay to and not use his high status as a ticket out. To this day he remains the republican opposed to torture.

His sorties were even close air support into battle zones, not some orphanage carpet bombing from 30k feet. He was injured by a bomb explosion trying to help an injured aviator out of another plane inside the fire. He volunteered for more combat duty after Forrestal was disabled. He got loving medals for flying sorties over Vietnam. He was reported to defend people who were bullied during his education.

His service was fine and he was a badass naval officer. There are millions of reasons to trash Senator McCain but it's absolute bullshit to try to drum up poo poo on Captain McCain.

That's understandable, but it is also understandable that some people don't separate the two since they are the same person and that the more recent McCain seems to gleefully support sending Americans to fight lovely wars that are not too different in some ways to the one he fought and suffered in. His military background, when cast in the context of his politics, can seem very different to people who find his political stances disgusting. That doesn't mean that he didn't do the things that he did, but it greatly diminishes their visibility, and it is completely and utterly understandable (but not right) as to why he might be a target of "swiftboating". It would seem his own experiences don't seem to matter that much to him given his stance on war, so I could see why others wouldn't respect his experiences, or even question their validity in some cases.

It is a shame, but he's also had every opportunity to not be kind of a gross cheerleader for war.

I apologize for sounding like I've remotely bought into :911:-type propaganda, but it seems that historically even when the country is placed in it's worst moments? It finds ways to kind of rally together, solve the problem and then press on.

The "Great Depression" comes to mind for example. The economic downturn we just witnessed doesn't seem to be any different. Americans as a whole seem to be very resourceful people. It's something that we're sold on in school and then we're kind of indoctrinated within the system for. I would kind of argue it has caused some harm, but has also probably allowed us as a country to continue to do what we do.

The idea that Mexico would have any sort of control or influence on the US just seems extremely absurd to me. I don't mean that in regards to being disrespectful to Mexico, but it just feels really silly.

I have been noticing this weird amount of cockiness coming from Russians lately. In the Nuke thread for example, I found a post off of a youtube video I found a kid that was literally hailing Putin while calling for a Nuclear strike against the US at the same time.

I guess the Napoliano video from 2012 was showing up because it was tied into "PERDICTS JADE HELM 15!!!!!".

I always find people who are just itching for social collapse really scary, because you know they are just drawn to the idea of a world where they can shoot all the people they don't like and carve out their own kingdoms. That Russians predictions would fit perfectly in that hope.

It's kinda like the predictions of "time traveler" John Titor who claimed that the US had collapsed and he lived in the south east who's citizen army armed with shotguns beat the Evil Government Army, which just oozes militia fantasies.
