How did that end up going?

Better than expected. He had like five people clap for him when he asked the question (you can probably find it in the video of perry's thing). Then when Perry answered one man one woman, but avoided the kids actual question the crowd went wild. The guy deflated but mustered up the courage to try and call him out on avoiding the question. Luntz shot him down mid rebuttal.

I found it amusing that Perry received the two hardest audience questions.

The looks are better if you do not wear anything confrontational and tell them in a middle of a conversation that you are atheist or a democrat. The eye bugging out, looks of disgust and changes in tone of voice are a sight and sound to behold. They can not eject fast enough from the conversation.

Was this your first fray into evangelical land? Cause this was the tip of the hate iceberg.

The inly scary moment I thought was the openly gay man asking Perry a question. Was worried how that might go.

Not my first foray into evangelical land. My first time going INSIDE to that particular event. I'm the guy in the video posted, I talk to the press for the Iowa Atheist group, so we're always out there doing stuff like this. We had the national director for American Atheists in there too, which was really helpful for getting more access than we otherwise would have had.

People there are just so hateful and its scary. I mean, I get it being a convention for a cause and can respect that, but it was downright hateful in their treatment of the "other".

I left after Carson though, so I don't know how it went at that point onward.

There is a thread in d&d talking about evangelicalism right now and prestor john's stuff is great too if you find that thread. You can simplify it down to hate (fear too), but it is a lot more complicated than that.

You missed out on some good stuff after him. He was the last one in the first session wasn't he? It just got worse.

Yeah he was the last of the first session. And yeah I saw the next speakers and had to assume it simply got worse.

I know this is kind of an aside, but I remember someone discrediting the Whats the Matter with Kansas thing as not being about evangelism as the author pointed out, but it was actually racism and hate that was the factor, not religiosity. These guys love "socialist" policy-so long as it applies to white Christians. If someone other than their perceived group gets it, they revert to "founding fathers" and other heuristics to deal with incompatible ideas between their faith, politics, and identity.

I feel like we saw this here. They love families, just not YOUR family.

Also the anti planned parent hood protesters were embarrassing. They got into an argument with a Biblical scholar from Iowa State on how the Bible justified violence against groups like Planned Parenthood and used that silly video to back their claims of "organ harvesting". It would have been hilarious if it wasn't so sad. The scholar "didn't understand or read" the Bible and "hated all Christians" so thats why he didn't agree with them.

I would love to type out a bunch of stuff that is just anecdotal and conjecture, but this isn't the thread for that. I'll just say from my experiences that I can both agree and disagree.

Yeah I love those radical Christians. I asked Santorum about them at a town hall and he brushed it off because their wasn't a ton of them.

Not to mention that by all accounts, McCain's most impressive and noble service was while captured: resisting attempts to use him in propaganda, tapping code through the walls which helped others in solitary not lose their minds/hope, refusing early release to avoid being used as propaganda and stating that he wouldn't accept release until those captured before him and enlisted prisoners were released, enduring torture to the point of attempting suicide rather than accepting special release, and more.

He may not have been a gifted pilot, but he served with great distinction as a POW receiving criminals poor treatment, and not just for his own benefit.

FWIW regarding morality of bombing Vietnam, McCain himself said that anyone in the military or thinking of joining has an obligation to pay attention to the government's behavior and decide if they could morally support it, so that those who oppose it could quit the military before the chips were down. POWs, even if they have moral problems with the behavior of the nation, have a duty not to take part in enemy propaganda efforts for a variety of good reasons.

I was going to make some flippant remark, but now I'm genuinely curious: why do you feel that Rand Paul would be an effective leader? Do you think he could accomplish some specific policy objectives? Could he build an effective governing coalition capable of passing substantial legislation? If he can't get a majority of Congress to work with him, what sort of things can he do administratively that you would like to see done?

Probably quite a bit, actually. Those POWs who came home via Operation Homecoming in 1973 got all their back pay, as well as bumps from automatic promotions a lot of them got (I don't know about McCain personally), as well as any number of other ostentatiously-awarded bennies like free cars, lifetime passes to major league baseball, and the like; this was done intentionally as the Nixon administration was trying its damned to make the return of the POWs (an issue Nixon was personally knee-deep in as it kept the POW/MIA constituency from falling into the hands of the anti-war movement) a "victory" moment for a war that frankly didn't have any others.

Speaking to reporters here Saturday after an appearance at the Family Leader Summit, Walker said the next president will need to be prepared to take aggressive action against Iran, “very possibly” including military strikes, on the day he or she is inaugurated, and said he would not be comfortable with a commander in chief who is unwilling to act aggressively on day one of a new presidency. In his announcement speech at the beginning of the week, Walker had promised to 'terminate' the Iran deal on day one of his presidency, and Bush, at a town hall four days later, said ending the deal on the first day of a new administration was unrealistic and suggested that promises to do so, while politically appealing, reflected a lack of seriousness

Listen, I can't stand Jeb Bush--but I don't think I can live in an America where the guy who says "I will not bomb the poo poo out of Iran on day 1" is the REASONABLE guy. How on earth does "I will not violate a major nuclear agreement at the start of my Presidency" reflect a lack of seriousness?
