Turned on my five-year-old Samsung today to find that the colours were all messed up. None of the colour settings on the TV help, and I did some Googling to find that it has apparently "solarised".

Does anyone know what causes this, and what can be done to fix it? Or is it time for a new TV?

Mine sometimes does that, and usually by turning the TV and receiver off and on again, the colors return to normal. Not sure about solarise, but mine turns to a purple color before we fix it.

Seems like a pretty great deal, anyone have any experience with manufacturer refurbished Vizios or TVs in general?

That looks like a pretty normal price for the Vizio 1080p 55". The 4k 55" is 950 regularly on Amazon.

I'm currently working with a 28" "1080p Full HD" TV that actually has a 1366x768 panel, so I can basically only go up from here. What is there to work with in the ultra-budget (<$400 preferably, 450 tops) ~40" range? I don't care about features at all, I just want it to be a dumb HDMI display. Do I have to suck it up and spend more or can I get away with this?

I'd find a Samsung locally for cheap via Craigslist or snag that vizio linked above.

I couldn't find another thread for this, but I got a TV with no audio jack that I want to hook some speakers into. When I look up solutions online, people say "get an AVR" and I can't find an AVR that isn't 200+ dollars. Is there any other alternative?

e: nvm, there's HDMI switchers with audio ports. And I also needed a switcher because the consoles are piling up

An HDMI switcher isn't going to have any amps with it, so external speakers are going to be a bit iffy.

You can get decent refurb AVRs for less than $200, especially if they are last year's model.

For example, $189 for this Denon and you get 5 HDMI inputs.

Am I crazy or are HDTVs more expensive now than they were a couple of years ago? I seem to recall there being a good selection of highly-reviewed plasmas and LCDs for under a grand, in the 50-55" range. Now people are throwing around much higher cost numbers. Is it because of the trend to 4k, or are the TVs just bigger also?

I don't really care about 4k. What I do care about is a sharp picture with uniform brightness/black levels (no light bleed), lots of A/V inputs and outputs, solid build quality/long life, and low/moderate cost. (Yeah I also want unicorns to fly out of my butt.)

Non LED lit LCD's are cheap because they're only still used in lower end sets. You don't see many cheap plasmas because no one makes plasmas anymore, although the few you will find are pretty cheap since they're basically all clearance items now(worked out great for me since I got a 60" plasma for $600 last year). LED TV's may have gotten a little price bump when they basically all started being smart TV's but 4K and OLED are still a tiny minority of sets so they haven't affected prices much.

In the Smash Bros thread in Games someone discovered that their TV was so poo poo that it wasn't displaying 60fps from the console. This sounds like a very rare thing but I'm a little paranoid since my TV, when running things that are supposed to be 60fps, looks noticeably less impressive than a YouTube video running at HD60fps. Have any of you seen or heard such a thing?

Granted, my TV is a 19 inch Samsung bought in 2009 (Samsung LE19B450C4W) but I'd like to know. Also it's in Game Mode.

I guess I'm confused because Vizio has plenty of models under a grand in that size range and they are well reviewed. I mean, we've always said in this thread that unless you really want to go high end, a Vizio E series at 55" for about $750 is the way to go.

Samsung, Sharp, LG, and Sony all have sub $1k sets in that range that I wouldn't kick out of bed. I mean, you can pretty much throw a dart in a room of sub $1k TVs and have a pretty decent chance of walking away totally satisfied.

The cheap plasmas were an anomaly since plasma died a prolonged death that had retailers heavily discounting the lower end models for a long time.

Your TV has a native resolution of 1360 X 768, so I'm not surprised you see artifacts on things as nearly anything but direct PC output at that resolution is going to need to be scaled in some way.

As for the person in the games thread, I'm also not totally surprised depending on the TV. Keep in mind that 1080p60 is extremely rare in the wild. Broadcast TV tops out at 1080i60 and bluray only goes up to 1080p24 or 1080i60. So, a lower end TV not doing proper motion processing on a 1080p60 signal sounds about right since they probably don't expect anyone to input that ever.

While the signal may be 1080p/60, virtually non actually have framerates of 60 so any deficiencies in processing would likely have gone unnoticed.

The 360 had plenty of 1080p/60 games because of its scaler. They weren't rendered at 1080p but the TV doesn't know that.

Anecdotal but since I said earlier in the thread I loved buying TVs through Amazon I'm going to say something about it because it just got even worse. I will never buy another TV through Amazon.

Summary chain of events

-Ordered 70" Vizio
-Next day a notice on the TV's product page goes up saying "We are temporarily suspending sale of this TV due to concerns our stock is damaged or is being damaged in shipping". I go into chat and ask if I should cancel my order because it was placed the day before, get told no that they will only ship it if they're 100% sure the problem has been fixed (My TV was still showing up as 'preparing to ship')
-It sits in 'preparing to ship' for a week, then finally ships
-Pilot (the freight company) calls to schedule a delivery date, and their delivery hours are literally 9am to 9pm on weekdays only. That's the smallest window they would give me. So whatever, I set the date. They then miss that date, so I go into Amazon chat and they offer a 20% refund on TV, I take it.
-They set up another 12 hour window delivery date I have to take off work for and TV finally arrives, outside box is fine, shippers open it up for inspection and the screen is smashed. I refuse the delivery obviously.
-Go to Amazon chat, who end up calling me, to be told I can have a full refund with the 20%. I accept it.
-Next day the full refund + 20% show up in bank (was from debit card).
-Day after that the 20% is taken back (how is this legal?). Go into Amazon chat and get told it was a mistake and they'll fix it.
-Next day 15% is sent with an email saying that's it.

Okay, okay, maybe that was just bad luck, right?
-See a 65" Vizio on Prime Day, order it.
-TV goes through prep shipping and to Pilot the next day. They schedule a delivery date of today (7/24), take off work.
-It then sits in the same destination on tracking for 8 days (Phoenix) doing nothing. I go into Amazon to ask what's up and they offer me a $50 gift card, I accept.
-Three days no gift card sent, no TV update.
-Call shipping company, get told it's still in Phoenix and they "will call me sometime next week to schedule another delivery date".
-Go back into Amazon chat who offer me a $100 refund and $50 gift card, that actually goes through, but now even if the TV arrives next week it will be 4 days taken off work to actually get a motherfucking TV.

So watch out ordering TVs through Amazon, and if you can request anybody else but Pilot Freight from doing your delivery because my experience with them isn't anecdotal, they average one star ratings all across review sites.

This is the one I just wrote about. Got it for $799 on Prime Day. I'll probably never actually receive it though?!

Really hope the news of the high 65" yields on OLED pushes the price down again next year, I'll be in the market to buy everything from scratch as I'm leaving my beloved Panasonic G20 plasma here. Feels like I need to jump up in size (from 50") and tech, but at $7k right now for that LG it's just too much.

Are people talking about soundbars more because they're being forced into a smaller solution (due to space/not destroying their marriage) or because they've jumped up in quality? While I doubt I'll keep a 5.1 system in the new place, I'd quite like to have an amp capable of it for the future and a 2.0 setup with either bookshelves or floor standers still. But if they're capable of comparable sound, maybe I should skip the amp stage too.

Also I see Vizio getting brought up multiple times a page, we don't have them here so I've never seen one of their sets. Am I right in thinking that a comparable manufacturer maybe someone like Yamaha (who I find always put out great quality gear for the price range). If I'm used to a late Panasonic plasma, do they produce something I'm not going to see as a downgrade?

And most of it (besides Amazon blatantly sending me a broken TV they knew about) is because they're using a shipping company that doesn't deliver on weekends and only offers 9am to 9pm windows.

Soundbars are poo poo on by audio people, and I understand why. It's mystery components of usually questionable quality in a nice, prepackaged, cheap and clean solution. If you know what surround codecs are, are up on Dolby Atmos, or otherwise are planning a serious room for movies/tv, there's no reason to get one. Most people don't know this and aren't planning anything like that.

That being said I love my Sonos. The soundbar + sub sounds great, I have 3 wires coming from 1 spot neatly hidden away, and I got it for a very good price. It also takes up very little room and requires no stands. I also am a pretty heavy music listener and I really enjoy the system for that.

If you want to mess with an amp and speakers, go for it. It will likely sound much better, but for people who just don't want to use their TV speakers I think they'll see a very noticeable improvement by going with a cheap soundbar.
