If you haven't heard them before, you'd probably like them, similar sound though a little more laid-back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOTG-5Yk5ec Beverly (and Tops) were great live, definitely worth seeing.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try for tickets to next week's show in Brooklyn that they announced a few hours ago. Hopefully they'll preview a lot of new material there. They put up the white vinyl pre order for the US this weekend, got mine all set. Holy poo poo I am amped for this album.

Oh well, at least my UK version will arrive a week after release and potentially beat up from its transatlantic journey? After watching last night's stream of the Chvrches set at Pitchfork Festival, I'm super excited to see them in Brooklyn this Thursday. Those new songs sounded great live.

A lot of reviews seemed to paint that this was Kevin Parker's attempt at going for a more pop/mainstream vibe, but honestly I couldn't disagree more. While it's a change in direction, it's more surreal and atmospheric than anything else he's ever done.

I liked Local Business for what it was, but I was always hoping for the impossible follow-up to The Monitor. Pretty dense, gonna take a couple listens to appreciate, but it's definitely in line with what I was hoping for. If this really is the last TA album, it'll be a high note. But more than anything, geez, hope the dude is alright - what a dark, violent album.

It's really the best follow-up to The Monitor we'll probably ever get. And yeah, "I hope that dude's alright" is how I feel about Patrick Stickles all the time.

I saw Mourn yesterday. They're a great band, and the drummer handed me his setlist after the show, which is basically the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me, so I feel obliged to post about them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFjZPy3T_IU They're also all scary young for how good the band is, like, "can't legally get into the venues they're playing in" young. I'm too young for bands to start making me feel old, dammit

I consider the Dears something of a clenched-fist-eyes-closed dirty pleasure (and I get the feeling Murray Lightburn is something of an egomaniac, given the turnover in that band), but I don't think that track is a massive departure from their previous work or anything.

Saw Chvrches tonight and their new songs sounded great. My hype level for this new album is intensifying. They were really sweet, too, because after their soundcheck they met all the people who were waiting outside the venue early. There were Popsicles, photos with the band, and autographs in store for the dozen or so people who were in line.

Gwenno (she was in The Pipettes, even after they turned into a different group) just re-released her album Y Dydd Olaf on Heavenly Recordings. It originally came out at the end of 2014 on a small Welsh label called Peski. The album is insanely awesome: atmospheric, Krautrocky, and entirely sung in Welsh--I think the final song might actually be in Cornish--without a single trace of the group that made her "famous." That's a good thing. I never liked The Pipettes. You'd never know she was in The Pipettes if I hadn't told you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CldPv3-VHmM I can't get over how good it is. Give it a shot. Almost everyone I've suggested it to loves it.

Initial impression of Titus Andronicus' The Most Lamentable Tragedy: It lacks a certain degree of desperation that The Monitor possessed and loses some of its impact. It's still pretty fun to listen to, though. Seems good overall and a lot better than Local Business. They will probably never top The Monitor and that's okay.
