I've wanted a swift gt for an eternity, but have only seen 2 for sale locally in 5 years... That said, what happened to the opel? Is that where the engine is going?

Yep, Swift GTI engine turned the right way around with a Suzuki Samurai 5 speed transmission behind it. The Opel engine was in really bad shape, I was looking at several thousand to rebuild it and even then it was questionable if the head was salvageable. This new combination makes a lot more power and weighs roughly 200lbs less. If my math is right it'll end up around 1750lbs with a 50/50 weight distribution. I was living hours away from the car while I was getting an engineering degree (which is why the thread died) but I moved down to North Carolina from Ohio a little while ago and I'm working on getting the Opel trailered down here. I'll start up a new thread as soon as I can. My model will be symbolically sitting on jackstands until then MonkeyNutZ fucked around with this message at 18:39 on Jul 26, 2015 |

GoodbyeTurtles posted:I think the plan is to land at Auckland and pick something up near there. An old fitted out camper would be ideal but even a stock Estima / lucida would be good enough if i'm just going to use it for sleeping, storage for gear and a base for day trips. Trying to keep the costs down though, so I'd ideally be getting something for around NZ$1500 or less if i've still gotta pay for fuel and registering it on top of that. I appreciate that i will have to go over-budget for something better though. If it comes with rego you wont have to have to pay for more. Rego stays with the car in NZ. If it needs a warrant (same as MOT) that could be what ever. You'll often find firesales from other tourists occuring on FB and the like though. I would personally steer well clear of the reeally cheap ones. Don't forget we've got a variety of Wagons that will fit a double mattress too. Camrey's Caldina's outbacks etc.

GoodbyeTurtles posted:Bit of a long shot here but does anyone know much about the second hand car / van market in New Zealand? i'm going there for 2 months soon and gently caress paying for places to stay. Getting a rental to run around / sleep in seems like it'd run up in cost compared to getting something cheap I can work on & repair myself if I need to. Might just end up using public transport and a tent if it ends up costing too much. Best option to save money is once you land, take public transport from the airport into the city. Airbus Express is the most straightforward way, NZ$16 direct from Airport to city and gets you virtually to the door of the bigger hostels in the city http://www.airbus.co.nz. DO NOT TAKE A TAXI, can be anywhere from $50 to $100 depending on traffic. You can do it cheaper than $16 on regular public transport services but it's a pain especially after a long flight and requires transferring from bus to train in a somewhat lovely neighbourhood. Once in the city, check out the various tourist-heavy hostels - that's where you'll find people desperately trying to offload their cheap campervan before they have to leave the country. Most have a noticeboard where people will slap up a flyer. Even if you take a loss when it's your turn to sell, you're usually still way ahead compared to a rental or paying accommodation. At a guess even taking a $1000 loss on selling your crap can you'd still be WAY ahead. Note that "freedom camping" like you're planning is a little under fire at the moment due to a bunch of dirty fuckwits making messes of the countryside and loving it up for everybody. Some places you can't camp at all and will get moved on, but just use your head and manners and you'll be fine. All of the tourist areas will have tourist information kiosks, don't be afraid to stop in and ask them where you can park up. Worst case in some places you might have to pony up ~$20 for a site in the local campground for a night. Buying and selling is pretty straightforward. ( http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/buying-and-selling-a-vehicle/ ) You wanna check if the car has current "reg and wof" -registration (vehicle licensing) and warrant of fitness (safety inspection). You have to have a valid WoF in order to pay registration. You'll have a MUCH better time if the heap you buy at least has a current WoF, since that saves you from possibly getting stung with expensive fixes before you can be road legal. Check for WoF on a sticker on the inside top drivers side of the windscreen, registration is a computer printed label on the bottom of the passengers side. If it's a diesel there is also road user charges which will be on that side too - road tax pre-paid per kilometer because the tax isn't included in the price of diesel at the pump like it is for petrol. Less hassle to just avoid diesels. Rego is charged on a continuous basis, so if it's a month expired when you buy it, you're on the hook for that month. Change of ownership and paying rego/road users charges can be done at vehicle testing stations or at any post office, or online. $9 fee to change ownership. Rego comes in minimum of 3 month chunks using the standard forms at the post office or testing stations, or ask them how and you can pay less, but I'd just do the 3 months, will help when you sell it. Rego on an Estima for example is about $200/yr, so you'll pay about $50 for 3 months. You could try and risk riding dirty, but the fines are $200 each, i.e. you can get stung $400 in one hit, and parking wardens or police are likely to be especially vigilant in tourist areas when you're in what's obviously a tourist-mobile. Speaking of fines, we have both mobile and fixed speed cameras, mobile ones are going to be most of what you encounter touring around. Legally you don't need even 3rd party insurance, and I don't know how it would even work with tourists, but you might wanna look into that anyway. Many of our roads are dangerous, you'll be in areas full of other tourists also unfamiliar with the roads (tourists pulling out and forgetting they need to be on the other side of the road is a big media thing right now after several high profile fatalities), oh and local drivers are loving terrible also*. If you're planning on driving from the North Island to the South Island, book the ferry as far in advance as you can and pray for good weather, Cook Straight is a straight up bitch. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN THE CAR UNATTENDED, ESPECIALLY PARKED IN TOURIST HOTSPOTS, YOU WILL GET ROBBED. Seriously, carparks around tourist sites are covered in signs warning you of this. It's safe to carry your valuables on you though, it's incredibly unlikely to get mugged or anything. Bring more money than you think - we're a tiny island at the arse end of the world, poo poo is expensive as gently caress. The food, beer and wine are great though. Be sure and eat as many meat pies as you can, concentrate on the ones you find in local bakeries rather than the ones in dairies (convenience stores) and gas stations, although the big chains BP and Z Energy will have good albeit pricey pies most of the time. Don't have PM's but don't be afraid to ask for more specifics. Along with the Estima's, look for Hiaces, Mazda or Mitsubishi vans also, although the Estima's will be the nicest to drive out of all of them. Edit: *Good news if you do have an accident is your basic emergency medical care is largely covered by our sweet socialist healthcare system! Get travel insurance as well though, in serious cases they will get you well enough to travel home and that's about it. BuckyDoneGun fucked around with this message at 04:48 on Jul 27, 2015 |

Well in this particular case, it's more a lovely working class neighbourhood, no reason to send tourists there. But while a lovely neighborhood in NZ might not compare to the roughest parts of the rest of the world, we've still got our own problems with poverty and racial inequality that lead to the rapes murders, beatings and child abuse that we don't show on the clean green tourism adverts. Before Hobbit movies were a thing, our biggest film export was a film about a wife beating piece of poo poo called Jake http://youtu.be/_MiGjZk6h20

About $2.09/l currently for 91 octane, so cheap than UK for sure. Fill up in the cities, it's higher in the out of the way towns. Travel times take longer than you might think for the given distance, outside of say, Auckland to Hamilton and short bits around Wellington and Christchurch, even State Highway 1, the main highway that runs the entire length of the country is basically a twisting 2 lane b-road you're sharing with other tourists, impatient locals, and logging trucks or stock trucks dribbling manure all over the place.

Wow the front lip options for my car suck. The few that are availableare downright offensive. There is one from some Korean company that is alright. There are some patches that are notoriously bad for having incidents with tourists too. But since you're from the UK and not a LHD country it should be slightly easier. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/honda/auction-923181092.htm 2 months WoF 3 months Reg.
