Scribblehatch posted:My good sir, I see you've quite cleverly alluded to something mentioned earlier in the thread! I think it doesn't really mean anything and is kinda silly. I guess the intent is to get people to understand that not every character needs to be likable, relatable, or sympathetic, but... the easy way to express that is to just say that. I agree with FunkyAl on this; characters are stimulus->response. They are their own people, so they respond to stuff happening the way they would. To act like column A and column B are mutually exclusive is a little disingenuous. Compelling, dimensional characters can be likable and sympathetic. They can also be shitheels. They're individuals with their own minds. So... do that. You invent a person and you imagine what it would be like for them to exist. At the end of the day writing a character-driven story is really like running a simulation and seeing what everyone would do when things happen or other characters do things. To top it all off I don't get what's even meant by "False Gods" except "I am overdramatizing the point"

But that's what I'm saying, first it says they can RUIN STORYTELLING and then basically says that they're fine but can be misused. Oh, okay. You can misuse a lot of stuff, like brushing your teeth with an oreo or making a comic page 99% exposition text boxes. It boils down to "to make good characters, make them good characters, as opposed to bad ones".

Plenty of critics go "There is nothing relatable about ____" as if that's a point all by itself. When, meanwhile, I find nothing relatable about Spike Spiegel. Being relatable is not the point. They're not to be confused with the building blocks. When building a pizza you do not sprinkle the oregano before anything else. If anyone had taken the Wally Wood or Pixar lists to task, we'd be talking about those instead.

The woods panels are a quick reference cheat sheet for decent panel composition, not any sort of rule that's being championed. The pixar list is their specific perogative when it comes to storytelling, that list is mostly useless if you don't work at pixar/are trying to copy pixar outside of a couple of the less plot specific steps like reducing the number of characters. The thing with the post it notes is, like, a whole nother level of mind numbing and pointless, same with the discussion of precensorship(sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's okay, it can be anything).

I'm hearing a names being called. Not a whole lot of extrospection. "Because it's DUMB and you brought up POINTLESS poo poo!" Yes yes yes. Very good. I think it's a fun image that does what it's meant to do: Spark discussion. And I'm confident the outlier of Sturgeon's Law will find its way here eventually. It takes the best of them to be devil's advocate.

Honestly I think every character should have at least a shred of relatability because otherwise why is anyone gonna care what's going on in their heads? Entirely unrelatable 'characters' are more like forces of nature or beasts.

Man I GUESS, but you posted em up there like they were all the big cheatsheet to writing comics It's some local single mom invents one weird trick to write all stories and now screenwriters hate her kinda poo poo. It's 2/3 good advice, but also meant to be internalized in a way that's less, "here's how you do things" and more "here's how these people did things, here's how it worked for them, here's what I think about their work, now I'm going to consider that along with countless billions of other things I have read an seen in an attempt to create a work of art others find compelling." It's abstract and complicated in a way helpful images like these either overlook or assume you're already considering
