Time Warner finally managed to get my cable modem activated. Apparently calling during hours when you actually get US based support gets you someone who knows their poo poo, who would have thought? For some reason my modem went back to acting in bridge mode, which is pissing me off; I'd like to be able to log in to it to see signal levels (they're weak enough that just switching out a splitter causes it to not sync). Probably for the best since I have a router with its own DHCP server behind it though. They also sent me a modem. Apparently if you sign up for home phone service, they send a full modem, and just disable the modem part via firmware. I was expecting something that needed a phone jack and ethernet; nope, this bitch needs coax and a phone jack. It's the exact same modem they would lease me for $8/month if I didn't buy my own. Also had to go buy a new router. I have a Netgear WNR3500L, which claims to have a gigabit WAN port, but speedtest.net was maxing out around 85mbit. Went to Fry's and bought the cheapest 802.11ac router I could find with a gigabit WAN port for a reasonable price (it was shockingly difficult to find any routers with a gigabit WAN port, though pretty much all of them had gigabit switches built in), finally found a TP-Link Archer C5. TP-Link has come a long, long way on their firmware, it's a shockingly powerful router. Especially for $90. Now I'm gonna be that rear end in a top hat for just a moment: My stepdad's laptop actually freezes up entirely when he tries to run speedtest.net's test until it finishes (his maxes out around 120mbit, though it has onboard gigabit, and links to the switch at gigabit speeds). The Core2Duo desktop in the master bedroom that serves as cable box and DVR duty struggles to keep up with the speedtest.net test as well (it starts stuttering really bad, even when moving the mouse, until it finishes), but it matches the above results pretty closely. I forgot just how much poo poo is on wireless. Walked past the thermostat and it had a message saying it couldn't connect to the wifi. Then noticed the printer wasn't printing. Then noticed the Kindle wasn't online. Plus the 3 phones and 3 laptops in the house. I called Verizon to cancel service. Apparently someone had waived the ETF (it's never shown up on a bill) - the CSR even said "oh, I see you won't be paying an ETF either, good news for you!". When she asked what price TWC had offered and what bundle, she went full stop on retention offers and said "yeah, there's no way we can come close to that". Cage posted:My favorite thing to do to the revvers is to rev back and then take off at a regular pace while they peel out. Never fails to make me laugh. It's more fun when they don't realize there's a cop sitting behind them. Celica (I think? it's been like 15 years) was revving the poo poo out of their engine at me, I revved back plenty, then when the light changed I took off like grandma, laughing my rear end off, and the cops blew past me laughing their asses off as they pulled over the Celica. fake edit: this was a fully marked patrol car. mariooncrack posted:Not defending Amazon's recruiting practices but I hear it's a nice place to work for. I only did the tire that day because Discount said they should have it done by 5:30, MAYBE 6:00 (it's 10 minutes from the IOP). Also because it's my only day off during the week - no way in hell are you getting me near anything retail on a Saturday (my only other day off). Plus my employer inspects my car every few months, and my boss took one look at that tire and said "you need to get that replaced before your next shift". Trust me, I was as pissed about missing it as you are about me missing it. I'm actually enjoying the IOP sessions (never in my life did I think I'd say that). Had I scheduled my appointment with my counsellor earlier in the day, I would have made it, but hindsight etc. CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:The concept of that coming from the POV of socialist republic of Australiastan blows my loving mind. I just got the ambulance bill. Just for them to show up was $745. Then $15 per mile for the ride. 6 miles. Total bill is $835. They didn't have my insurance info though; I've provided it, so I'll probably wind up owing about 10-20% of that. And I was so dehydrated that they couldn't get an IV started (my veins run away and hide even when fully hydrated), so I basically paid for a bumpy ride strapped to a gurney, and a guy going "holy loving poo poo" at my blood pressure (197/something). I'm dreading the hospital bill. Oddly, they haven't even billed my insurance yet. Last time I was there they billed my insurance the day after I got out; I've been out over a week now. It's most likely because it's such a wonderful idea in theory. The process is elegant from an engineering standpoint, so people who understand that elegance want it to succeed despite the obvious flaws. I was sold on it when I got to drink the exhaust from a fuel cell in class once. Not to say it's at all practical currently. I had a discussion with someone in regards to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles vs electric vehicles vs hybrids back in 2008 with the Honda FCX Concept at the example. What held true then still holds true today - there is absolutely no benefit to Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles over hybrids or electrics when the energy supply chain is considered. In fact, they're worse in every conceivable way to a modern electric because whatever tiny amount of gain you get from not having to transport the electricity over the line to a person's home or workplace charger pales in comparison to the energy lost using electricity to convert (source) to compressed hydrogen fuel, and then transport it to a hydrogen fueling station. Unless/until we come up with a way of creating compressed hydrogen fuel that doesn't rely on conventional energy generation and whose energy generation isn't possible to garner electricity from, OR whose process results in a more efficient generation of hydrogen than it does electricity, HFC vehicles will continue to be a wasteful exercise in marketing and nothing more. The Mirai, which is in production for the 2016 model year, barely even has the added benefit of longer range than a Model D - EPA tested 312 miles per tank VS. 295mi EPA range for the S85D. I've loved Hydrogen as a fuel source ever since my grade-7 science fair project where my buddy and I compared "Hydrogen vs Methane as Opposed to Fossil Fuels: An analysis of Portable Energy". Gods I wish I could find that, we nerded it up something loving fierce. Our poo poo was strong, especially since that was "dial up and use gopher" days of the internet. We concluded that hydrogen and methane were superior fuel sources, but only if we could address challenges in supply creation. We also predicted that everything would be hydrogen cars by the year 2000...we may have been off...
