This was the most adorable thing. I love GDQ, man.

Edit: JEsus, I've seen some broken Pokemon runs and I swear to god I can never keep track of them. Like, I always follow it and then I jump up for ten seconds to grab a soda and suddenly he's halfway across the world fighting Zapdos

Excellent.
Aaaaand now he's pulling Eevees out of a sign.

I have to say I've seen Pokemon Blue get glitched to hell and back so many different ways but this is a special kind of magical here. This makes the rest of the Any% glitch runs look downright straightforward and sane.

Missed the Luigi race, was it as good as I had hoped since FyFy and Veman are great?

He seems to have some notes, or a computer or something in front of him.

Memory protection, what's that? :downs:

Also, Twitch chat spamming Twitch Plays Pokemon memes during this is strangely amusing. That might be sleep deprivation talking though.

Who needs memory protection anyway?

Someday I hope to program a game whose RAM can be manipulated by something as innocuous as throwing items away.

It looks like it's just a stack-smashing bug: he convinced the game to let him extend his inventory into whatever random crap happens to be below it in the memory layout, and since this is a Game Boy game the answer to "what is below the inventory" is everything, so he can just change random bytes in memory.

they're legit writing directly into the game's code because

Direct memory manipulation glitches are endlessly entertaining to me. There's a run (I don't remember if it's real-time or TAS) of Super Mario Land 2 where you get pushed through a bottom of a level and the blocks that the game conjured up represent actual bytes of data, so you can skip to the credits by breaking the right ones. :science:

I want to say this was at AGDQ, even. gently caress me if I can remember what it was, though I think it was real-time.

If it was a glitch, surely the game would freeze or crash or something.
