I actually started watching Fate/Zero recently, and I'm liking it a lot more than what I've seen of Fate/Stay. I've been meaning to finish the VN for fate/stay, but haven't gotten around to it. I know that UBW/Heaven's Feel routes are supposed to be good, but so much of the beginning is taken up by anime high school. I don't want anime high school. I want ruthless, amoral magi fighting for the Holy Grail. Fate/Zero delivers on that whole-heartedly.

How a cartoon about the future millennium's telekinetic human race could be affecting me like I'm watching An American Crime and Trust simultaneously is impressive admittedly...

But I could really go for a cute pink magical goddess of hope to rain some loving feel-good arrows around here. I'm off to watch some Azumanga Daioh, eat icecream and possibly sob in a curled up blanket-ball in the corner.

I find it hilarious how many people were underwhelmed by UBW coming into it having only seen F/Z.

If I had to recommend a show to someone who enjoyed Madoka, it'd probably be Mawaru Penguindrum. My first thought when I started watching it was that I was watching an anime Mother 3. This only reinforced itself as the show progressed.

Well, Penguindrum was written by the same guy who wrote Utena, so a lot of the same themes pop up. And they can be disturbing. Interestingly enough, while the show was airing, I was doing a capstone research report for my Masters on the incident that Penguindrum is inspired by. Knowing the particulars of the incident and the group responsible made it even more disturbing. (I'm trying not to spoil anything.)

It has more or less nothing in common with Madoka in terms of tone and thematics but if you want an anime with pretty visuals and sound that is always doing something visually, watch Kyousougiga. In fact watch it anyway because everyone should and almost no one has. You can (and probably should) jump straight into the TV version, starting from episode 1 because the TV series covers everything relevant from the ONAs anyway and several major plot things clearly changed between the production of the original ONA and the TV series, which could easily trip you up because the way the whole thing is framed is pretty much tailor made to make you remember what you've seen but not which thing showed it to you or in what order.

Well, you done did it now. You really did recommend the anime that is as far removed from Madoka as possible.

It's really good :toot: It's one of those shows where the protagonists are just a joy to see in action. Also, given the entire setting, I did not expect a story about suicide from this. Really good music, too.

I'm not too sure what to think of Fate/Zero so far, though. I know absolutely nothing about the franchise (?) otherwise, but it feels very weird how the characters keep talking about classes and abilities. I wanna see ridiculous action scenes, not action setpieces separated by exposition and Magic The Gathering talk. Getting a little annoyed at that. Really, the action scenes are great, but I do not like how they keep pausing for whatever reasons. Half the time, I wanted to yell at some character standing in the background why they're not stabbing each other during their speeches. In direct comparison to Madoka: it's really not pure action, and a lot of it is quite abstract with the witches and whatnot, but when it gets going, it really does. Part of the reason why I like battles like the timestop onslaught on Walpurgisnacht or Homura vs. Mami from the 3rd movie is that they start off, and just keep going. I'm a little disappointed, given how much hype I've seen for Fate/Zero fight scenes. Also, the Berserker CGI is just embarrassing.
I'll watch this a little more and see how this continues, mostly because I'm actually really interested in the plot (6th episode so far - Kirei is gonna be so loving evil, I can feel it).

I tried to watch the show years back, when it was new, and turned it off in disgust halfway through. That was back when everybody was like, oh my god this show is so new and original and fresh, it's like nothing ever before! And I had just finished Kamen Rider Ryuki. So I was like, waht the gently caress, this is literally just Kamen Rider Ryuki! What's wrong with you people? I thought it would be worth giving a show another shot, now that I have some distance from Ryuki and it seems like the consensus has changed to that Madoka shines in presentation, not originality.

I just watched the first episode tonight, and it was really good. The art was amazing, and the chracters were really strong, even this early on. I got a question tho. The classrooms looked like bird cages to me. Is that a thing? Is that, like, symbolism, or is it just part of the shows' clear love of rectangles? I guess that's actually a larger question; How much symbolism is there in the art and desgin of the show, and how much is just looking nice/fitting the mood/etc.?

There's a lot of symbolism in the show. Based on episode 1 for example, there's the difference between the safety of their school and houses compared to the danger of of the construction zone where they end up in that strange world, which the series will draw on later. As well, there's the designs of the Witches, each one actually has a bit of a backstory which you can glean from the visuals you see in that strange world they ended up in.

There's enough symbolism in the series to make a case for it referencing Utena at various points, but I never tried to think too deeply because they're just allusions at best.

That's something that happens a lot in the Type-Moon universe. One character will stop in the middle of the action and dump exposition on the audience. Then after they establish that a certain rule cannot be broken or an action cannot be stopped, somebody ends up doing what they shouldn't have been able to do.

Edit: I'm blind. That's exactly what the guy you quoted just said.

Yeah Fate/Zeros first half is a bit of a slow boil due to the amount of setup being given for all the characters. It was originally a series of light novels so exposition that goes quickly in a book is somewhat slower on screen. I recommend you stick with it though. The second half has some excellent pay-offs and has a much better ratio of action:exposition.

Quality of the rest of the franchise is very uneven but Zero is solid.

There is a lot of symbolism but some of it is there because it looks cool and not because it fits very well or has great meaning. If I remember correctly one of the animation/background dudes is a huge chair otaku, so the show has some quality chair porn. Are those chairs symbolic? in some cases they are but it is mostly a guy that really, really likes 'em.

So I'm a fairly big fan of Utena (I call this Fabulous Max and have it hanging in my hallway: http://fav.me/d7xss0h) and I also liked what Ikuhara did with Yurikuma... But did anyone else find it very difficult to watch through Penguindrum?

I've been trying to finish that series for the past 4 years, but stall out every time (furthest I've gotten is 16).

The best I can figure is there isn't a singular character to grab and hold my focus like with Utena. Growl. Growl... Sure Ringo was grating early on, but she's much less so now and I just watched really cool episodes about Yuri and Masako's childhoods so I think there's just something wrong with me.

But yes. You should watch Utena first as an intro to Ikuhara... but not the Adolescence of Utena. That would be a jarring introduction.

Continuing Fate/Zero! It's strange - somehow, I'm starting to see similarities to Madoka, and I really like that. But at the same time, I'm starting to see this as somewhat of a shitshow.

Weird.

Basically, I'm really enjoying the story so far! The characters are wonderfully twisted and interesting, and I really like how it makes the most of its embarrassingly videogame-like premise: the Servants feel less like gimmicky Pokemon and more like larger-than-life characters given a second chance. Kinda feels to me like Gen Urobuchi actually takes the premise to its logical conclusion, including just what an omnipotent wish device would mean for people (can't wait for the revelation what THAT'S gonna be). I particularly liked the little talk between the three kings, which featured Archer being a megalomanical dick, Rider being a boisterious dick, and Saber being owned constantly (why do you never have a comeback :saddowns: ). Didn't really care for the obnoxious school girl ep in between - that one felt like someone else was writing it...

But - and this was particularly surprising to me - this show has poo poo battles, and is boring to look at far too often. Everyone moves stiffly outside of fight scenes, people keep standing around motionless like idiots, everyone moves angular like robots. All the time, you basically have characters stand around in unnecessarily large spaces, where every feature of the environment is too far away to make them behave or move differently. It feels sterile and isolated to me. And then the fights themselves! I appreciate what role they play in the story, but it feels like kids making up poo poo and throwing it at each other, while making awkward pauses inbetween. I started imagining each line of fight banter being preceeded by "Well, I just HAPPEN to have this ability:". Even the Magus Killer falls into this trap - instead of outsmarting an arrogant mage with an ultimate defense with awesome traps and being Batman, he pulls out instant counters out of nowhere and then uses his special ultimate-defense-piercing mage-killing gun. I'm really disappointed so far. Oh well, I guess the events themselves work with the story, regardless of how boring they look...

TL;DR version:Show that looks flashy and stupid in a videogame way utterly subverts my expectations by having sterile, boring battles and a genuinely fascinating story + characters. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE
