I think Zoolander is one of those movies where it very much depends on how old you were when you first saw it. I finally saw it in like 2005, right before I graduated college, and I just did not loving get it at all. I tried again a few years ago and I still don't get it and I've finally decided it just isn't for me.

It's just one of those movies that was decent out of the gate but has just slowly accumulated a massive following over time. I actually didn't like it at first and, while not my favorite movie ever, certainly has gotten funnier on repeat viewings. It definitely has some of that early 2000s naiveté left over from the 90s that is part of the appeal for a certain age group. That said... Long awaited comedy sequels seem to be nothing but disappointments so I'm not holding out much hope.

Zoolander was one of those movies where somebody suggested that it was much better on a second viewing. The fuel fight was still the only scene that made me laugh. Not even David Bowie could save it. So yeah, this reeks of desperation to me, but hey... even Austin Powers needed more than one movie to get it right*. *Make lots of cash, become a pop culture icon

The first half or so, sure, it's creepy, but it falls apart in the worst way. Genuinely thanks for this. Knowing that this is the plot has totally turned me off seeing it. I loving hate films with trailers that imply the movie is completely different to what you actually get. It's the ultimate bait and switch and i wish there was a false advertising claim you could take out against film companies/cinemas.

It got kinda overshadowed in the the wake of everything after 9/11 but just by dint of word of mouth and being played on TV constantly it's become super popular. I mean, it's not for everybody, but from 2002-2006 you couldn't go anywhere without people quoting Zoolander, making a Zoolander reference, etc. I had low expectations for the trailer, but I honestly laughed at the little references during the brain imagery part and at the ending. Fingers crossed it'll be good, or at least not so bad as to ruin the original.

I dunno, I just enjoyed Zoolander a lot the first time I saw it, then saw it again by chance on TV, and loved it more, and I don't think my liking of it has ever declined on any subsequent viewings. It helps that it's really quotable. And the gasoline fight is loving hilarious.

But rather how far and how long did it exist in the cultural language (not necessarily "did it leave a lasting impact?")... And by that measure it reached pretty far.

It definitely was huge for the younger demographics when it came out (teen - early thirties maybe) but didn't end up lasting long (probably due to the sequels) and was more of a fad compared to Zoolander (people still reference blue steel, ^ male models, center for ants, etc). In hindsight, I wouldn't say it had the same cultural impact as Zoolander though.

Before "Cool story bro" was "Cool story bro", it was "Cool story Hansel". One great thing about Zoolander is that it actually bothers trying to be a movie. So many comedies just take a basic point-and-shoot approach, and don't really worry about whether the story coheres as long as the individual bits and performances are funny. Zoolander is filmed with a lot of attention to detail in the costumes and sets, it has a distinct stylistic voice, it's edited to an efficient pace, and it makes sure even the silliest scenes keep the story going forward.

I feel like good sequels to good comedies are even harder to create then good original comedies. I think this is because it's really hard to get a good comedy script develop into a good comedy film. There's a huge amount of luck involved in the alchemy and the fact that they get greenlit at all is because someone managed to write a really funny script. Then it makes a shitload of money and now the film is greenlit based on box office earnings and someone is hired to try and write another funny script that you hope has the same amount of humor and voice but it isn't often their own voice and really you're starting the lottery all over and you end up with Dumb and Dumber To or Evan Almighty. In rare cases these things work like 22 Jump Street.

I haven't seen Ant-Man, but there are some screencaps floating around of a diorama in the movie that includes a replica of the "center for ants" from Zoolander. Zoolander doesn't work for everyone, but as far as cultural touchstones go it's got some significance. Edit: Here you go Mat Cauthon fucked around with this message at 00:52 on Aug 3, 2015 |

And yeah I guess you guys are right about the cultural impact of Zoolander, guess I just never noticed since the film was never a comedy film touchstone/reference point for me. Like, I think of how big Austin Powers got and the initially significant but later diluted Hangover hype. I just hear basic bitches and basic dudes reference stuff like "wolfpacks" and "that bearded guy from The Hangover" and the previously Fear and Loathing dominated Vegas escapade blackout fantasy...as opposed to blue steel or like, jokes about ants And yet, we'll never get the Undercover Brother sequel I (inexplicably) wanted as a young boy Punkin Spunkin fucked around with this message at 02:04 on Aug 3, 2015 |
