This is true. If you're not competent enough (in whatever way is the issue, be it socially finding competent people, or doing damage, or dodging mechanics, or whatever), no upgrade is going to really fix that underlying problem. Enough upgrades can eventually let you squeak by on the "doing damage" front, I suppose. Though you'll get there a lot faster by doing a bit of reading on the internet and playing with a target dummy for 15 minutes.

This does not, however, in any way change the fact that for a given player (competent or not), a weapon upgrade will improve their performance more than any other upgrade.

Actually, better gear can make even bad players do enough damage to get past DPS checks.

I'm fairly accepting of people in the game not making the most efficient, highest DPS, best rotation choices, etc... Not everyone reads up on information or asks questions about such things.

But if you are posting in an online forum thread devoted solely to this game, I expect you to at least passively absorb knowledge from it. Maybe give two shits about the game? What else separates you from the "pubbies" you constantly blame all of your problems on?

If you choose to be willfully ignorant of the information posted here than so be it.

If you look at stat upgrade per eso though would the accessories be a good value? Especially for the ring. Better than the chest/legs possibly? (assuming weapon first still though)

I had heard the chest/legs are the worst value in token pieces (4 instead of 1). but not sure how the math works for esoterics.

No it really isn't the same. At all. It's not even new advice, it's been around since 2.0; whenever a new tier of gear comes out, the weapon is the one thing that causes the most increase in effectiveness at your job, be that Tanking (you make more threat) DPSing (big numbers woo!) or Healing (epic heals, leading to more time to DPS). If you haven't figured out by now (level 60 and several weeks of capped Eso tomes) that the weapon is the single biggest decider on your performance you are willfully bad and ignorant.

esoterics i believe the best upgrade path is weapon, belt next week, chest in two weeks, head/gloves/boots in three, and then it kind of branches off from there based on your class

I have never said that weapon isn't the biggest upgrade. I just think that some people may not pick weapon first and that does not make them wrong. It just depends on what their goals in the game.

Quick and easy way that ignores substat weights: Do (tome cost)/(main stat increase you'd get). Lower is better.

I agree that it does not make them wrong. But it absolutely makes them less effective than they could otherwise have been.

Depending on their goals, how much those depend on their effectiveness, and how much they care about each of those goals, that drawback could range anywhere from irrelevant to shooting themselves in the foot.

TooManyUzukis
Jun 23, 2007

If your goal is to be nice and helpful to the people around you in this group-based cooperative game and you play either a DPS or Tank, the objectively correct choice is the buy a weapon first. If you don't want to be courteous to others, then you can buy literally anything else.

Well we can agree on that. The right choice is weapon when it comes to content efficiency, but many many people don't care about that.

For the people like myself who will hit 60 post release of esoterics, many will probably pick up whatever fills the holes in their gear. If they have an ilvl 190 weapon but have ilvl 160 pants or boots, they may opt to go after those.

Well, what comes to mind as a counterexample is, as a player on Balmung, the RPers.

Many of them, as far as I can tell, spend all their in-game time typing out paragraph-length emotes (very slowly), and quite possibly never run dungeons, do other group content, or even level up very much.

So yes, to a player like that, I could absolutely see that effectiveness in the in-game combat would be completely and utterly irrelevant to their interests, and would have no impact on anyone else either.

(But yes, most people actually do group content of some sort, even if only with strangers, and the point applies - at least to some degree - to the general population.)

at was my thought too: All things being equal, of course Weapon is the first thing to upgrade, but when I had just gotten an upgrade to my Weapon it was worth weighing a slight upgrade to your weapon against a larger increase for a different item, the choice didn't seem as clear cut.

If my calculation was wrong, then fine, it's not like the end game is stingy with Esoterics.
