All the talk about Trump and the potential for a GOP meltdown reminds me of the sidebar on an XKCD analysis of US Congress ideology that remarked that while political scientists are pretty sure the fifth party system has ended, they couldn't agree on where. So we're currently in Parties 5: Part 2: Electric Boogaloo.

NOMINATE scores own. They have made that sort of analysis much easier. There has been some push back in recent years over the argument that Congressional ideology is one dimensional lib-con though (which NOMINATE more ore less assumes -- they have a second dimension but that doesn't 'tap' the lib-con dimension, it taps hating or not hating blacks). These people argue that Members of Congress are more polarized over some issues and less polarized issues. For instance, IIRC, one of the biggies is domestic vs foreign issues. If you're interested, John Lapinski's The Substance of Representation is one of the main books making these claims.

If sanders doesn't win the primary then I REALLY hope that Trump wins his, because if we're going to have a republican prez it might as well be one that gets on the Koch's nerves.

Also because a Trump presidency would improve our Yooj exports.

I think the biggest sign that Trump might not be able to win nomination is that Jeb's support has been unwavering through his surge, and would likely be just as much if not more of a beneficiary of people dropping out as Trump.

More than that, the field is ganging up on Trump and letting Bush quietly lock up more money and give interviews in spanish etc.

Put in terms you guys can understand, Bush is the 2/2 who gets +1/+1 each turn, Trump is the 4/4 with taunt. The longer Trump stays alive, the more beastly Jeb is late game.

What exactly are the likely scenarios for a Trump flame out? Everyone's saying it'll happen, but how?

We've already been through a number of outrageous comments, a rape allegation, showdowns with various GOP elites with no visible damage... If anything, these battles have only left him stronger. Plus, Trump is basically self-funded so the money doesn't matter like it did with folks like Herman Cain.

That's just it, though. He's got a 59% unfavorable rating amongst all voters, and yet he's the front runner for the GOP. Unelectable in the actual election, definitely, unless the Democrats put up the zombified corpse of Leon Trotsky or something, and yet it doesn't look like he's going anywhere in the GOP primary. The people who like him, really like him, and the other milquetoast guys aren't inspiring much of anything.

In some ways this is a natural knee jerk reaction to losing several big social issues recently - there's definitely something seductive about someone who just says whatever and doesn't give a gently caress. That's why evangelicals are overlooking his personal issues.

What's going to break the stalemate is that as candidates start running out of money and have to withdraw, their numbers are going to go to non-Trumps. Eventually enough of those are going to Jeb that puts him in the lead, unless Trump convinces Cruz to endorse him or something.
