Fine. The Coyotes select Damon Severson with their 8th round pick because we think T-Bone might take him. He's only played one season in the NHL so far but at 20 years old he played against top competition and held his head above water; his WOWYs look good too. With a top 4 of Goligoski, Hamilton, Sekera, and Severson we think our defense is both cost controlled for the next 6 years and extremely flexible with regards to how we structure our offense and defense.

Young with a high scoring upside. Scored four goals in a game once (and was not later arrested for public indecency). Is adorable. Plays wing or center. Hits more than I thought he does so that's good. Had a down season last year so maybe folks are undervaluing him a bit, either that or he was gonna keep dropping but I think this will end up looking pretty good in the long term.

Next pick is one I hope some folks will end up hating me for (because those are the best kind). There are a handful of young D that I think are much better players even now, but since a lot of my team is RFA in a year or two, I need a solid young guy with some upside, and more importantly, a nice shiny new contract.

Adam Larsson
When I read his name or hear about him, I always think of this gif. Young and poised, and very raw. The verdict was out until this season but it seems like he's turned a lot of people into believers (Ray Shero being one of them).
22 is young for a defenseman. He's top-4 material right now and he's likely going to continue to improve.

We'll shake it out like this for now but with Smith and Hertl both being natural centers I foresee some shifting.

Hall - Nugent-Hopkins - Smith
Hertl - Couturier

Lindholm - Pietrangelo
- Larsson

Nyquist, Zibenejad, Silvferberg and Hornqvist all getting picked pretty much killed it. I would've had to go way off the board to take a swede forward right now and the only D I was considering taking instead was Larsson, so.

I was so close to taking Pominville since I have no one playing RW right now but the good, young defenseman won out

I'm really curious to hear Devils fans' thoughts on Severson vs Larsson. I took Severson because he's younger and it looked like Larsson was carried largely by Greene.

Phaneuf-Myers is a defense pairing alright.

I have:

Bergeron-Hornqvist
MaxPac-Zibanejad

AGreene-Carlson
Klingberg

Anderson

I think that's a decent team, now to fill in those wingers, a 3rd line C and 4th defenseman, and take a bunch of long shot prospects and Mike Babcock.

At least I have a bit until my next pick to beef it back up.

Craig Anderson is an above-average starting goaltender. Sometimes he has Vezina-worthy seasons, other times he's merely average, but on the whole he's somewhere around 10-15 leauge wide. He is old by non-goalie standards but should last for another 3 seasons or so. He is roughly as good as Varlamov and as a bonus he isn't a total piece of human garbage.

Andy Greene is still the Devils best defenseman and they're good defensively so he must be good too. He had some of the best fancy stats in the league for a couple of seasons but didn't do so well last season trying to carry a couple of rookies on a godawful talentless Devils team. He doesn't score a lot but I have Carlson and Klingberg to do that so steady solid D is all I need.

Now.I'm going to Hawaii later chumps.

I hate Larsson so I'm not the best one to ask but yeah I think Severson will be better. More high end skill, more poise, better skater. Larsson is being lauded now as some kind of shot prevention/PK specialist which he was never drafted for and I'm highly dubious of it

I think Larsson's going to end up as a top 4 dman (which he kind of is already). I was considering him as well but I just don't think his ceiling is that high anymore. He definitely looked better this year and has room to grow, but I just don't see anything that makes me think he's suddenly going to significantly improve the mental and position aspects of his game that are lacking.

I actually like Myers and Phaneuf heading into next year. I expect career resurgences from both under new coaches who will use them properly.

Also I'm not gonna have my defence criticized by a guy that had Brenden Dillon and Kevin Klein on his last two top pairings in these drafts.

There are plenty of skaters who I like here but at the rate that goalies have gone I feel like I have to take one or else I'll wind up with dallas' goaltending situation from last year, so I'll take MAF

I'll put some faith in PAS and trust them when they say his new goaltending coach will have him playing at his last year's level of a .920+ for his entire career going forward. Plus he was even pretty good in the playoffs!

and yes, I know, my first dman is a flyer, home of the dman garbage fire. but with my offense, I need a dman who all he needs to do is pass the puck up, and pass well on the powerplay, and this old fart has done a great job of that over the years. With my overpowered top 2 lines, he should help make the PP even more deadly, even with his glaring defensive issues.
