That has a bunch of demon tech themed weapons.

I played through Doom 2 for the first time in a decade or so using this newfangled Brutal Doom thing that I had never bothered with before. Somebody found these books in a library discard pile and gave them to me because they knew I was a big Doom fan: The strategy guide actually came in handy! It's far easier to look up a map in there than browsing doomwiki.org on a phone trying to find where the %*$# that switch is. One level I got stuck in because I had thrown a grenade into a room and coated it with blood, completely hiding a switch. BRUTAL Overall the book is about as bad as you would expect. The multiplayer guide looks like he grabbed a marine training manual and copy-pasted some BS in there without ever play testing it. (click for readable) Yeah, sure, "echelon right." Nobody in the history of mankind has ever played coop Doom like that. There's also a Romero interview in the back, but nothing too interesting. Some hype for Quake which was still in the Hammertime phase. Mr Ed Dille seemed to refer to Romero as the coding genius of id which was a bit odd but I'm sure he didn't go out of his way to correct him. The Doom book seems to have slightly more effort behind it since it includes screenshots in the level descriptions instead of just an annotated map and wall'o'text description. It even includes E4! As for the game, Doom 2 was less tedious than I remember, although some of those bullshit traps become bullshit cubed with Brutal Doom. FU Sandy for that stupid rocket launcher trap in Map 9: The Pit. I thought Brutal Doom was goofy but amusing. I feel like there's probably features I'm missing but whatever.

I've been messing around with this mod since you posted and it's surprisingly fun. It suffers a little from the "...and the kitchen sink" syndrome, but it definitely succeeds at mixing things up and giving you a lot of satisfying toys to play around with (on a significantly expanded beastiary built on the back of Brutal Doom v20). That Demon Rifle is particularly fun as hell to use--it fires rounds like an assault rifle, but they immolate targets on contact; secondary fire consumes an entire magazine to send out two or three lost-soul-looking things that zip around and wreck shop on enemies. The ammunition for it is acquired by killing monsters (with larger creatures being worth more). There's another weapon that spawns in the BFG tier that basically reminds me of Unreal Tournament 4Ever's "Quantum Singularity Generator", right down to being a dark purple; after a lengthy wind-up, it launches a black hole. That alone makes it worth the price of admission.

I'm screaming at the mod creator politely on mod db that he went overboard with the weapons and doesn't really need to be adding any more right now. Unfortunately, he plans to add a quad shotgun and that silly static cannon from the doom 4 preview. Thankfully any new weapons will be optional. Now if only he would do something about the cluster gently caress that is slot 4. 4 loving guns on one button is not sustainable. Also I'm looking for good single player HL 1 mods, not multi player. Sorry about that.

Yeah the weapon key clutter is definitely a problem, which is why I'm thinking about cutting 4 or 5 of the weapons from the game. I don't really need several extremely similar rocket launchers, miniguns, or plasma guns. Almost every single assault rifle is fun as hell to use, though.

Half-Life 2 Jaykin' Bacon: Source (Despite the name, it is a Goldsource HL1 mod) is a weapon/gameplay mod that adds a bunch of silly weapons to the game, like finger-guns that make enemies drop weapons, a scoped knife, and an airsoft minigun that does very little damage but can make you fly if you fire it downward. It doesn't spawn them into the maps though, you have to use impulse 101 to get them. Download here. Poke646 and its sequel, Vendetta, are rather polished single-player campaigns of just good ol' Half-Life action. The Halfquake series are sadistic puzzle games in which you have to survive traps in facilities literally designed to kill you. Half-Life: Decay is a fan-port of the 2 player co-op campaign from the PS2 version of Half-Life. If you don't have another person to play with, you can play both characters by switching between them.

HalfQuake Amen and Sunrise are some of the most well designed 'gently caress you' things ever made, and they're insanely fun and weird looking games. Sunrise is effectively it's own game entirely, replacing everything half-life and only really using the engine. I would actually be rather interested if these guys decided to make a standalone, for-profit game built around this premise.

Point of View is really good and I highly recommend it. Lots of interesting organic weapons and level design. Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut is also an incredibly good horror mod made by the guys that made Cry of Fear recently. Its atmosphere is thick as hell and it takes lots of inspirations from Silent Hill. Nothing but straight-up horror.

An endless amount to check out pretty much, there's a cool compilation launcher of many map packs and mods for eduke32. You don't need the High Resolution Pack thingy on there, the addon compilation is at the bottom of the page. They fixed a bunch of bugs and whatnot in older maps too. Thanks for this, I'd been looking for something like it for a while.
