These guys are lucky as hell to have walked away from this. Considering the fact that this was powerful enough to blow chunks out of the concrete.

A slower, more cancer filled death than burning alive in a firestorm.

Probably.

Yeah, the Russians are really pissed off about the MH17 thing. They are running a campaign to say that the investigation wasn't done properly. And they used some stupid excuse to implement annoying extra border controls for Dutch flower imports.

Aaaanyway, that comment seems to be removed. Let's get back on topic here.

So they started an independent investigation to what caused this collapse. They want to be thorough, so they'll expect it'll be several months before a report is published. People and companies involved in the case don't want to say anything about it until that time.

Journalists then decided to interview some independent engineering experts, such as an engineering professor at some Dutch university. They seemed to agree that several mistakes were made:

- This should never have been done with two floating cranes. When they did a similar thing at the same place a few years ago, one of the two cranes was on solid ground. This gives the crane operator much more control. Operations like this are never done with two floating cranes and this shouldn't have been an exception.
- A year ago, a complete safety investigation was done by people hired by the city. They described the possibility of cranes falling over, and suggested those buildings should be evacuated for this procedure. This didn't happen, and at this point nobody knows if any recommendations from the safety report were followed.

Now, the thing is that the construction and crane companies weren't just some backwater idiots. They're apparently well-known and they were trusted by the government for doing good work. So I don't know what happened this time. Maybe they got sloppy with safety procedures over the years.

The company responsible for this also decided to start working on a bridge during a storm a few weeks ago and managed to drop about 5 tons of concrete on the legs of one of their workers. Safety is definitely not something they're good at.

Many of them run from the fire, but they can't from the powder being rained upon them.

Apparently it's a slurry of water and ammonium phosphate fertilizer. From what I can find the main concern seems to be if it gets in waterways it can cause a fish kill, so they try to avoid dropping it within 300-600 feet of creeks, rivers, etc.

Our gently caress up is fighting the fires. Fires are natural and if allowed to happen would mean less devastating fires. Instead we fight them and allow the underbrush to grow which adds fuel to the fires.

Got to get more pine beetles somehow, easiest way is to not burn the forest and just let it turn brown.

Dead pine trees are insanely flammable though. Years ago some friends burned an old christmas tree in a tiny courtyard garden and it went up in seconds. This was obviously a stupid idea but someone poured water on it so the real problem was how do you get a soaking wet half burned christmas tree out through your flat without covering everything in poo poo.

Answer: you don't.

Apparently this self-propelled saw of death they are using in our complex doesn't actually need the operator next to it to move. That seems safe.

Also, I thought it was hydraulic or pneumatic, but the line to the truck is actually just water for cooling the blade.

Uh, yeah, no. This guy is SO stupid and he or his company will be facing a major fine if OSHA catches him doing this. Free climbing is NOT permitted for tower workers. He might think it is because some old gray beard told him it was cool when he used to climb towers 30 years ago, but not today.

I think he's only hooking in to take rests, and doesn't have a safety line the rest of the time.

I would guess that the correct way to do this is to have two hooks and have at least one connected at all times. Connect hook above you, climb a few steps, connect 2nd hook above you, remove the hook that's now below you, and so on.

The commentary says he isn't hooking himself in - he's hooking the tool bag in every now and then in case he drops it.

Or something like an ascender on a fixed wire ripe.

Aside from the general insanity of being on 1700ft tower, not clipping in for the transition points where he has to haul himself around around a big flanged plate were the insane parts to me. Not clipping in every 3 feet while going up a ladder or truss? Sure. You're well supported and are making the same motions to repeating holds over and over. Not clipping in when you're searching for new grips and don't have your center of gravity close to the tower? No. Bad.
