Only game that's really similar to the meat of Catan imo is Avalon Hill's version of Civ, which is probably better but also takes 8 hours and requires minimum 6. Amazing game though.

Does anyone have a decent way to store all of the Descent monsters? I have literally every one outside of first edition. They were inside the LoR box but there's slightly too many since Vision of Dawn came out. I don't mind spending £60+ but I really don't know where to look!

When I think of Catan what makes it unique is the variable resources given by moderate board-play, lots of discussion between players and possible trading of cards, trying to maximize the resources by playing the table. That's not really a thing other games have done well except Civ in my experience, not many good trading games out there (Bohnanza, I suppose).

Bang! cards, at the very least. I don't know if the money is the same (because they use that really, really lovely new loot system that has more than just money), the powers got changed to less balanced and more ~*~WaCkY mOnKeY cHeEsE~*~ powers, and there's no NARC components. The only thing worth keeping would be the guns. Just get your own guns somehow (Nerf guns, dollar store cap guns, whatever) and PnP the pretty redesign of the first edition.

I made this version and it looks super great, although I don't have the stickers on my chips! I may have to add that. Also that PnP edition features my favourite role card, the Pandemic. Which results in a whole lot of trying and failing to be sneaky. Or just in general people being afraid to get up to use the bathroom. somehow it always ends up sticking around for games we play later, after cash and guns has been put away already. That PnP looks pretty nice. It doesn't say how many of each card to print out though. Or how many chips you would need of each color. I suppose you have to do the legwork to figure that out yourself. I suppose the bloody hole cards are wounds? Might just steal some of the Zombicide wound cards from my cousin's set. He doesn't need like 50.

Was able to get two games of Mage Wars in at the local game store. My opponent played beast master both games, I played force master and then warlock. Both really fun games, and both were pretty close. I had a massive sleep spell hit the first game putting out 5 monsters, but I only had 4 life so he just punched me to death with his mage. Will probably try and get some more games in some other weekend, trying to see if we can somewhat regular matches. We were playing at The Only Game in Town in Jersey if any of you guys know where that is.

Grats on getting some games in! That's worthy of accolades in and of its self. I picked up the new Mage Wars Academy at GenCon but haven't dived into it yet. Supposed to be an easier to learn/teach/play version, no game board, just more traditional head-to-head card play, that can eventually graduate up into Arena, the full scale game.

Got to play Mysterium and Merchants & Marauders for the first time today. Maybe we were playing it wrong, but M&M was needlessly complex and seemed to drag. It was everyone's first time playing so that may of had something to do with it, but I doubt my opinion will change. Mysterium on the other hand was great. I've always thought Dixit was a bit overrated, but the co-op nature of Mysterium combined with a bit more structure of an actual game was really enjoyable.

I've played a couple of times now with mostly the same group. Only person that didn't like it so far was my cousin. He basically just wants to draw really nice pictures and the first couple of rounds didn't even manage to make a single guess. He was too busy filling in some useless details on his picture when everyone had already guessed it correctly and moved on. He did eventually start guessing, but ended up at -2 total. Ah well. After we played I sat around with him just drawing pictures of stuff picked from the level 4 cards so he wouldn't be rushed. That was fun too.

I played me some games today. Spyfall looks like it's a blast with the right people. I, being someone who tends only to communicate fairly bluntly, am not the right people. It looks like a super light and casual social game but I think it requires several plays to figure out what kinds of questions one should be asking. The manual for Specter Ops recommends that the first game be played with 3 or 4 people. We tried it with 5 and found out why. It wasn't that it played badly per se, but the manual was clearly written for 4 players max and the 5-player traitor game seems written in as an afterthought. The manual itself is super lean to the point where I wished it was meatier. We spent about three times as much time arguing about the rules as we did actually learning them. The rulebook simply felt unfinished. The hunters ended up getting lucky with a move, since we knew that the agent could have been in one of three alleyways and the first player to move spotted him. We proceeded to jump the agent and taught him never to step on our turf again. The game was fun enough and I enjoyed myself and I hope I never have to play it again. After a couple of people left, we got some 3-player The Voyages of Marco Polo going. We used the first game variant and the role cards combined with the city cards to create a pretty unbalanced game. I got Matteo Polo. Since one of the first cities I could reach had the "gain money equal to twice the die placed" card, I was able to get enough money to abuse my white die to rocket around the board by travelling twice in a few rounds, pooping out trade posts everywhere and using all of my territory to help with my free contracts. These contracts either game me free black dice, more money to rocket around the board with, or straight up free travel. I basically autopiloted the game and won with 85 points. I don't know if this is high, but it was 20-30 points past the other two players. Everyone said they enjoyed the game, but it looks like Raschid requires a bit of game experience to squeeze the full potential out of and the Berke Khan player wasn't too impressed with his ability in a 3-player game. Marco Polo was easy to teach and about as quick as advertised. That said, if I want to play a dice euro I'm probably going to gravitate toward Troyes edit: The group is getting familiar enough with my tastes that the moment I set up Marco Polo someone said something like "yeah, Gimnbo would have this game." I also informed the resident social/traitor game specialist about Dark Moon and Codenames. Gimnbo fucked around with this message at 05:04 on Aug 9, 2015 |

James The 1st posted:Anyone played Clash of Cultures? Is it any good? Not specially. I found it way too hard to focus on the right tech areas because of how web-like the tech trees are, and it suffers hugely from the fact that the maps are random and can therefore come out incredibly unbalanced if you get (un)lucky, in the same way most 4X boardgames do - which is fine if you're playing co-op stuff like Mage Knight, but lovely when the first tile flip gets you attacked by barbarians before you can do anything about it, and you are thereby unable to found new cities effectively for a round or two after everyone else, which snowballs into them winnning because you're a turn or two behind in an 8 or 9 turn game. And like virtually every other 4x, the combat is determined randomly by dice-off. Which always sucks. The expansion definitely helps it, but it's really not a very good game for my money. I really want Vlaada to design a map-based 4x to show us all how it should be done. I mean, Through the Ages is getting a second edition soon which sounds like it's going to really help what's already the best 4x out there, but TtA doesn't quite have the same feel when it doesn't have... you know, a map.

Am I nuts, or is 4X just better done on a computer? There's so much poo poo to keep track of if you've got a couple cities/bases/etc.

No, you're not nuts. It transitioned to computer well and thus far map-based 4x has really struggled to transition back the other way IME. There hasn't yet been a designer who's really got it. I'm sure it's possible to do it, but they might have to abandon some of the more cargo-culty things at this point, like randomly generated maps and randomly determined combat.
