I'm actually going to go and play the latest build right now. It's still in alpha, but I'm definitely seeing the signs of a good, DF-y project. The latest build apparently has the dreaded FEELS baked in now, along with Sanity, and the monsters now actually explore and patrol areas... Which may turn out to be a problem.

I'll be interested to hear what you think. Can't stay up for the stream sadly, but if it sticks around afterwards, I'll watch it :)

Is there a way I can put in a standing order to keep dying cloth if the resources are available, don't cancel the order or notify me if resources aren't, and then resume when they become available again?

Well, streaming isn't terribly useful right now, but here's my current impressions on MAIA 0.49a:

First off, it's still a little slow. Three hours into the latest build, and I'm barely able to get things done because a) The socialisation need that now needs to be fulfilled, and b) The fact that two of my crew died. The auto-build function (to speed things up in this Alpha build) has been replaced by console spawning, which is actually working out quite well (I just spawned two colonists to replace the ones I've lost. Also, from once I've got a functioning (mostly) base, there's not a whole lot to do except wait and see what research does.

The game, as you might expect, is not without its bugs, and a couple of new features have... Somewhat amused me.

Things I Like
- Research has an instant effect. It's not always an obvious one, but it is pretty much instant.
- IMPs , your robotic helpers, and the sentient, if faulty Doors. Later builds promise first person IMP control and said FEELS affecting Robots too.
- The silly little references and the Haiku Generator.
- The options for power generation. So far, Solar and Wind are your starters, with Geothermal being the "Stop worrying" point, and Fission and Fusion reactors potentially adding extra hilarity and energy later (Currently, the only thing I need to research the Radiation room for is the better storage)
- Weather and environmental effects that affect said power generation. They're pretty awesome looking.

Things I'm Not So Hot On
- Chickens disappearing. I suspect it's a rehash of the original bug.
- It not being clear whether a thing isn't being taken down because the colonists can't be bothered, or because they literally can't access it. For example, until I removed my Wind Turbine, the body of N. Henderson (Who'd foolishly gone outside without a suit) couldn't be body bagged.
- Feedback isn't entirely clear at this stage, so it's not clear what a colonist is planning to do, or what their needs truly are.
- Once you've researched a thing, it's stored on tape drives. Problem is, you can't currently look at what you've researched in the past once you've hit about five research items, because no text is scrollable atm, and it results in a weird graphical glitch.

Things That Kill You
- Not building atmosphere generators and living space fast enough. Lack of sleep, food, and air will kill your colonists.
- Mining so indoors suddenly becomes outdoors when colonists are indoors, but not in a room. Why did you do that again?
- Earthquakes have a small chance of rockfalls. Rockfalls destroy colonists just as easily as they do IMPs. I'm also assuming that if a colonist is extremely unlucky, they can fall into the fissures said earthquakes can generate.
- The local fauna is not friendly, and it's a tossup whether you worry about the Megafauna most (Look like massive lemurs with teeth, tend to wreck equipment) or the other creatures (Look like Archaeopteryx, and will eat your stray chickens, cat, or dog.
- EDIT: Almost forgot, and I shouldn't have, because it's new to this build... FIRE. Your atmosphere generators, in the early game, are especially prone to suddenly catching fire, and... Well, fire doesn't spread over steel floors, but it does spread to colonists trying to fix the damage. :v:

Things That Make Me Laugh

- Colonists will die to the atmosphere outside, but cats, dogs, and chickens give not a single gently caress, and quite happily roam around outside the base right now. Humanity is obviously obsolete as soon as the animals get opposable thumbs.

Now, some screenshots from the latest version... Orrrr not. You're gonna have to wait for those, because Steam screenshots don't currently work. So I'll have to IRFanView or FRAPs things (Preferably, in this case, FRAPs)

How long can I expect it to take tunnel tubes and goblin caps to grow? I breached the first cavern layer in spring and it's now autumn. I forgot to buy some logs before I embarked on this bare mountain and these guys are complaining about the one bed.

Hey, friends!

Lethosor remembered that there was a simple way to close the screen again. Everyone familiar with how lua scripts are added into the arsenal yet? Save that pile of characters as "scriptfilename.lua" in \Dwarf Fortress\hack\scripts and punch "scriptfilename" in as a console command or keybind the thing. It'll open up Legends in a snap and back right out with Esc.

My army just killed an invading Dragon with only one injury, a melted arm. I don't know how "melted" limbs work but that seems terminal.... Anyway, in the end it didn't matter. The dragon ignited every tree on my forested map, and my FPS dropped to 1. I had to just kill the game

Thanks everyone who offered help/suggestions for handling cloth production in response to my previous post. I managed to get clothing mostly under control

I just had a dwarf strait up murder my mayor and best weaponsmith. No tantrum announcement, no crime in the justice system. Done in the middle of the dining hall. She just punches these two to death. Both of them are Legendary wrestlers, axedwarves, armor users, just out the military at the time. She's a new recruit.

Her thoughts said she was 16 years old and felt regret about murdering them. Then she went back to sparing.

I ran cursecheck through DFhack to see if at the very least she was some sort of entity, but came up nil. I'm at a loss for why she killed them and how she managed it with no skills and poor strength, and how no one who was standing right there noticed.

If she took them by surprise she may have got a good shot at their heads, with predictable results

If Fell moods are still in the game, that could have been it too. They'll follow up after the kill with butchering the dwarf into a legendary relic, but no one in the fort will notice.

Is there anything in the starter pack that's known to cause frequent crashing? I don't have many utilities turned on except for soundsense and the announcement filter, but I keep crashing randomly on multiple forts.

KUVA TEAM EPIC
Nothing you have running should cause crashes. However I've noticed even completely vanilla, no fun things attached DF is kind of crashy for this version.

If you are ok with having the DFHack window open, the 'quicksave' command is a very useful thing if you got crash problems. Also turn on seasonal saves.

I'm using both but the crashes happen faster than I can remember to quicksave, like maybe half or 3/4 of a season at most

Are you building stuff on the surface within a wooded biome? Or building stuff underground in close proximity to fungal trees?

That's a known bug. There's a binary patch available.

Anyone got any tips for colonizing hell? I can kill most demons really easily except for one. Winged fiends in my game shoot webs which are bullshit. Webbed dwarves are as good as unconscious and that means the demon gets a free headshot, ignoring all armor and skills. Otherwise the other demons are fair fights.

Can I edit out the web shooting ability in the saves raws?

My Dwarves aren't using barrels consistently in stockpiles. My seeds and meat are just getting put one item to a tile despite plenty of free barrels/bags. Why would this be?

Excelzior
Jun 24, 2013

using barrels in seed stockpiles is a bad idea, because dwarves will take the barrel out of the stockpile, bring it to the plant, put the seed in, then bring the barrel back - and the barrel is of course unusable by your other dwarves the whole time

e: maybe it was the other way around for planting rather than harvesting. One or the other

If all the barrels are away being hauled, dwarves won't wait for one, they'll just put their item directly in the stockpile. That's probably what's happening.

Are your haulers separated from the barrels by a burrow or a locked door?
Do the stockpiles have "allow bin/barrel" toggled off?
Is another process claiming all of those barrels? (idk if this happens with workshops but definitely does with constructions)

No to all of this.

Like I said, it's pretty inconsistent. Sometimes they use barrels in the meat stockpile. Sometimes they don't. I have 20 barrels sitting around.

In older versions, there's always one structure for every region tile (i.e. 16x16 site).
