Dunno if there's been much uber/lyft/etc chat here recently or if it's been run out of AI, but I tried it out tonight and don't think I will do it again. The passengers were fine and I made $140 in six hours of driving, but that's before gas, wear and tear, and paying my taxes. I drove nearly 200 miles, all city miles, which equates to 1.5 to 2 weeks' worth of driving in one night... and I should have seen it coming, but driving a stick shift around the city for 6 hours SUCKS. 4 or 5 times a month, and I'll be doubling the annual mileage on my car and service it twice as much, not to mention sacrifice most of my weekend nights for maybe 4 grand over the course of a year. The countless uber ads I hear in my podcasts make it seem like Driving your own car! is the best deal ever, when really uber benefits from shifting any responsibility of maintenance and upkeep to their

Yep. I don't know about your side of the pond, but here taxis (also called private hire vehicles) have to be licenced by the council they're registered in, and you have to have "hire and reward" insurance too, as well as public liability insurance. I don't know much about Uber over here, but it seems like the only people who do well out of it are Uber themselves and the passengers paying peanuts for their journies. Black cabs have been protesting and loads now have stickers on them that are anti-Uber. (without mentioning names) But black cabs are almost always driven my mouthy cunts who can't drive and never stop talking poo poo, while they take you the longest possible route. We have pre-booked taxis (Addison Lee) where they give you a price before they arrive, an accurate ETA and always have nice clean cars.

Just booked the most expensive vacation I've ever planned, going to lounge around in a 5 star Mexican resort for the honeymoon the morning after the wedding Can't wait, and the thank gently caress we're past the booking process, picking a place and trying to see how the prices are trending was maddening, especially since my last year of school starts the week after the wedding so I can't be flexible on flight times, let alone dates. Now for the the self-doubt of whether or not we got a good deal and if it'll live up to our expectations.

It's no wipe on/wipe off bullshit, though. 1 - Clean lights with Windex or whatever 2 - Spray on crazy cleaner poo poo from kit (smells like super concentrated Windex) 3 - Wet sand with 400 grit, 1000 grit, then 2000 grit paper 4 - Scrub the hell out of it with rubbing compound 5 - Clean again with spray cleaner 6 - Coat with UV coating With the exception of the UV coating, all that stuff could probably be bought individually in much larger quantities. The kit makes it pretty damned convenient, though. From what I've read, the Sylvania kit is definitely the way to go.

I've heard really good things about mexico so I'm crossing my fingers it'll be great. I don't think we'll be doing excursions at all and we splurged a little for a nice resort so we'll stick around and experience all they have to offer. So the "new" alternator I put in the Civic is also junk. I guess I'll buy a rebuild or something but realistically, how far/long could I possibly drive the car without it? I really need to get it back here where the tools live and I don't feel like trailering it. The trip is 7 miles, about 15-20 minutes in traffic.

Use the starter, lights, and accessories as little as possible and it will probably make it an hour or so without an alt. A friend drove his XJ for that long on the highway with all the lights going and his field coil unplugged, but those have a larger battery. This is assuming a fully charged battery starting out. Are you sure the alt is dead? Two in a row isn't unheard of but check other stuff too.

It was a junkyard part out of another high mileage Civic so it's not that shocking. Pulling the battery out of the Miata which is like 9 months old so should be good there as well.

I've always felt the only way Uber would be worth it would be if you were to use an older beater that you could run into the ground with minimal maintenance and generally not give a poo poo about. I think both Uber and Lyft are fairly picky about how new your car has to be, though. Doing it in anything even somewhat new seems dumb as hell. What do I know though, I used my own car as an independent contract courier for two years. I didn't have to worry about being dicked around on pay because of not having the right phone charger or whatever though.
