Early committals for next years GenCon from my group of friends is like 6 people. Isn't there some hotel that has suites or something?
Embassy Suites may, in fact, have suites. Now, like basically any other hotel, its maximum occupancy is still not 6 (I think they are cool with 5, or at least the few years we openly had 5 in the room and asked for a cot they did not complain), but you could do worse than the Embassy Suites for sleeping 6 certainly. Though it would help if there were at least 2 people who wanted to share a bed, obviously. The pull-out couch is acceptable for a pull-out couch and we have one guy who swears that just laying the couch cushions on the floor and throwing a blanket on it is more comfortable than several actual beds he has used.

There are surely other hotels with overall bigger rooms, but having a solid door to shut off the sleepies from the parties once Midnight rolls around can be very useful.

When in doubt, err on the side of Awesome!

I will second the Embassy Suites. Last year we had 6 in the room without any issue. They also have a good free breakfast and let you game in the lobby pretty late.
If you do stay there be warned that the floor of the room is just carpet on concrete, so you'll want to bring something to sleep on. The hotel provided comforters will not cut it.

I hope the hotel thing goes more smoothly next year. I actually didn't mind the lottery. Though people didn't all get what they wanted, I don't know how else they could have done it more fairly (excluding the two major bugs they had of people buying badges after noon skipping the queue and some early numbers crashing). Next year I could be coming with as many as 12 other people (though more realistically it will be closer to 8). Living in Philly we usually fly, so it really sucks to not have a hotel within walking distance or at worst on the shuttle line. Might look into driving next year if our numbers are that high though. Will have to see, since I've been living carless for a bit now, not even sure who can drive.

Speaking of the shuttle, anyone take it this year and how did it go?

Also, I was at the Westin this year and I just asked if they had a double I could have instead of my king when we got there and it wasn't a problem to switch. Not sure if someone else canceled or they handed over one of the rooms they reserved for last minute rack rate people. Regardless, doesn't hurt to ask.

I listened to the RPPR post con report yesterday, any other decent pod casts up that talk about anything worthwhile from Gen Con?

I'm glad I was able to find a downtown room already because it sounds like a headache going through that whole process. Is preregistration in January and does it save the hassle of waiting in that huge line at the convention?

Yes, you should pre-reg. You can ahve your poo poo mailed to you and skip all the lines, or pick up your poo poo the day before from noon (they're open all night too so you can stop in at 3am and skip all the lines.)

Yes, pre-reg if you know you're going. Pre-ordering your badge lets you into the housing lottery, which isn't amazing, but if you're going with a group, then you can have everyone in the group in the lottery, improving your chances of getting the room(s) you want.

And will call has improved a lot in the last year or two, but it's so nice just getting that poo poo mailed to me.

You also save a few bucks ordering your badge early. It's not a ton, like :10bux:, but if you know you're going, why pay extra money?

Gencon was a blast this year, due in no small part to hanging out with goons. I actually got out of the gaming hall and tried some new poo poo, for the first time in three years I actually felt like I was at a convention and not just a four day Heroclix marathon. Thank you all whom I spent time with actually helping me have fun on my yearly excursion from the Pacific Northwest.

The GroupMe was (and continues to be) entertaining and informative, even if having it open destroyed my battery life. I'll be investing in a spare battery for next year.

I've managed to avoid getting sick this year, another first and I'm willing to credit that with superior goon antibodies (or at least gaming with y'all keeping me away from the unwashed masses).

I look forward to grabbing Dark Moon after my next paycheck and hopefully murdering all of my friends as quickly as I killed Outpost Goon Alpha on our first mission.

Edit: as far as housing and signups go:

Getting stuff mailed to you if you register far enough out is awesome. I never needed to worry about will call, with cross country flying anything that removes an extra line from a trip is a godsend. Thus far I've stayed in the Westin, Springhill Suites, and Omni Severn; I got lucky the first two years and snagged cheap rear end rooms off the bat, but this year I got dicked and had to book Omni through Orbitz.

Of the three I liked Springhill the best; the room was huge with a couch that could easily accommodate two and the free breakfast was good if crowded, and you get good exercise making your way to the con each day. Westin was comfy but smaller, but benefitted from being ridiculously close to the ICC. Omni is an older hotel and it shows, the closet door was falling off and the room was pretty tiny for what I was paying, but there was a full Starbucks attached so that's a point in its favor for me.

I took the GoExpress shuttle to and from the airport, and aside from a 30 minute wait on the way into town before a shuttle showed up it was worth it, cheap and easy, and it stopped right by my hotel.

Yeah the shuttle coming from the east side worked pretty well for us, we were the last stop though at the Marriott so I could see it being a bitch if you were earlier on the route. All in all I'd recommend it though.

Awesome, thanks. One of the auction employees definitely mentioned that they would send a check if I wasn't able to pick up my payout on Sunday, just wanted to confirm that was the case.

I had an awesome Con this year, my second. There weren't really any new games I was looking forward to, but attending the event just to see everything is definitely worth it. Also I got to sit down and play Tragedy Looper with the developer and meet the puppeteer/VA of Crow T Robot from MST3K! I'll definitely hit up goons next year, I had a couple 1st-timers with me so I wanted to give them my attention this year.

Next year, I'm definitely going to skip working a shift judging. It's a nice gig, and even doing one shift covers the badge, but the badge is the cheapest part of making the trip, and if not having to schedule events around some mystery 10-hour block means I have to pay for my own badge, then so be it.

Which means no Wednesday night meeting (so I can show up for Trivia, assuming I get there in time) and being able to attend an event whenever I feel like it.

It is also worth it if you are volunteering for something you would be doing anyway, but the Auction is a little unique in that regard, because I cannot think of many other volunteer duties that leave you basically free to participate in the thing you came to Gen-Con to do while also getting a badge or hotel paid.

Speaking of, come volunteer for the Auction everybody :haw: now if only we can somehow convince Josh to come back for T.O.V.A.

What are the hour requirements for that all with auction volunteering anyway? Its something I won't be able to do till a year or so after we are done with the D&D Documentary, but I would seriously consider it when I know I don't have to commit to other things around the con.

Lot's of pretty games, but I really only found about 10 games that excited me (most being old releases I just got around to trying). I'll Fetch My Sarcasm Robes
According to a friend of mine who runs a booth each year, it's getting harder to get booth space, you can't get a space next year unless you exhibited this year, and then there's some sort of point system to determine where you get your space. So if you're a new exhibitor your only option is to get a booth in the entrepreneur area, after which you're eligible to get in line for a regular space the following year.

But by all means let's let Chessex have 5 booths to sell goddamn dice, a poo poo ton of leather cosplay kilt poo poo booths, about 20 MTG buyers (who have huge booths for some reason), and put a barren artist's alley in the back taking up 20% of the hall.

I'm glad the artist's alley is a thing, and I get that it gets more foot traffic by being in the exhibit hall, but I think it's time to move that thing somewhere else. I would love it if they could take those CCG vendors out and put them in the CCG tournament area but unless they wanted to staff them 24 hours a day I don't think its feasible.
