I think the silver fern is a general new Zealand symbol rather than one specific to sports I think it's perfectly reasonable to have on a flag, but id prefer a koru

I like the silver fern but all those rectangular abortions have convinced me that there's no way of implementing it in flag form that doesn't look like a pile of rectums. It's just the wrong shape and has the wrong flow for a national flag. Koru is much better.

Thus, we come full circle to the fact that the flag changing 'debate' is almost entirely fabricated as a handy smokescreen to distract from the genuinely bad poo poo the government are doing. Yes, they can do more than one thing at once, but it's a little bit galling when tens of millions are spent on something nobody really gives a poo poo about just for a PR strategy.
