I look forward to MPs complaining about $26m for public consultation on the flag being too costly applying the same level of scrutiny to the financial costs of their own policies.

butt wizard are you serious or just trying to play devils advocate? because this government's constant excuse when they want to avoid doing something is "there isnt enough money", like if youve ever heard Bill English talk or been to one of the post-budget breakfast things that has been the theme of every single one for the past 8 years. You're naive as poo poo if you don't see the cynicism in a government spending $26m on a flag campaign (that is likely to change nothing given all the polling since before it began) while refusing to spend more money to address an issue like child poverty, or to properly fund the various community service groups that govt agencies rely on anyway

it'd be enough to open and run a women's refuge in every major town in NZ. Alternatively it'd keep the women's refuges that exist currently running basically in perpetuity, and much more efficiently because they wouldn't have to constantly scrounge for funding. Alternatively it could fund a full time special needs worker for every single decile 1-5 primary school in the country. Just a couple of examples of better ways the money could be spent~

Look I would rather see that money go to stuff like Women's Refuge or fully funding Plunket etc. But the reality is that if you assume we're going to have a referendum when we do change the flag at some point in the future and they cost about $9m each, then the flag consultation itself is only costing $8m. For the chance to make that next step towards our own identity ala Canada, that's a relatively small amount of money, and you can probably find $26m of existing spending to question at the drop of a hat.

The cost of changing the flag is also a one-off, whereas the stuff you are suggesting would be an ongoing commitment, so you're not exactly comparing apples with apples. And there's always going to be more morally compelling things to spend money on than a flag. There's always going to be poverty. There's always going to be economic issues to deal with. There's not going to be a utopian ideal time where everything is magically fine and it's suddenly OK to consider a new flag, so that's not exactly a compelling point either.

But if you really think $26m is going to make any real difference to fixing child poverty and not just be a band-aid symptom-fixing exercise then there's not really much I can say. You fix child poverty by spending billions on state housing and social welfare reform, not by arguing over $26m on two referendums you're probably going to have at some stage in the future anyway.

And if Labour was pushing it? Would you be up in arms about it then? I suspect most people currently opposed would be hailing it as a vital change in our country's forging of a post-colonial identity. You know, like when Labour got rid of our right to appeal to the Privy Council without running it past anyone. But that's just petty constitutional stuff, no need to consult anyone about that, nope!

You're also turning a blind eye to Andrew Little flip-flopping on his position on this but yea, focus on Key being 'shady'.

E: No you're right, what Key should be doing is making racist inferences from poorly-interpreted incomplete data and then crying when he's accused of being racist, because vilifying people with foreign names is apparently the kind of thing we should focus on instead of our flag.

Oh no guys! He's besmirching our precious Labour party that we all support and vote for! We are undone!

I can't believe I voted for the anti-fun party. Which is what the Greens are as they didn't want to back a bill so people could get drunk in public at 7am because that is how you enjoy rugby.

Andrew Little likes fun because he'd drink at 7am if the All blacks were playing and winning and drink twice as much if they were losing (then presumably go home and beat his wife)
