Which is honestly a waaaay worse way to think. It might be better to have an image that was more along the lines of "hey, you know that group of teens that terrorize you every day? if you die now, they'll forget all about you, and your friend's memories will fade too. gently caress that noise, be the best you can possibly be and make them remember you for the rest of their goddamn lives."

It's the E/N way of dealing with depressed people. It's too much effort and would require an actual drop of empathy to show love and support for someone who wants to kill themselves, so it's easier to just pile on the guilt and shame they probably already feel and then put them out of your mind, pretending that it helped. Depression is different for everyone but shame is a very central part of it for me, and while it is technically a suicide deterrent, it's not "helping." The idea that shaming someone so that they don't kill themselves is actually helping comes from this weird mindset that the only meaningful point is that they don't kill themselves, because suicide is a Bad Thing that must not happen for some reason, and as long as the suicide doesn't happen then we can safely go home and forget about it. But the actual effect this has is keeping somebody alive while making their life even worse, because they're dealing with the extra guilt you threw at them before saying "you are someone else's problem now" and leaving them with it. Guilt doesn't make anyone feel better. I do not understand how there are so many people praising that mess.

I don't know, if someone had told me that the damage I would do by killing myself would pass, that would have made me more likely to do it. For some people, it's the feeling of having given absolutely everything you had and coming up short. Maybe that's why psychologists need so much training, different approaches are going to work for different people.

It's not a kid on Facebook or Tumblr or something saying dumb poo poo they'll grow out of in 3 years, it's basically reddit-lite, the majority being young adults (18-25 or so), people who should know better.
