I haven't played ranked in a while, but I remember having more fun in tower control than splat zones, though both are really fun. Splat zones gets real intense when there's a tug-of-war on.

Pro tip for tower control: if you have a solid lead and time is running out, don't overextend and try to go for a knockout. It's better to have a solid setup in the middle than to try to push inwards. If you get a teamwipe you're way more likely to have them counter push and get the win than if you remain calm and defend the middle, which is generally easier.

I freaking love Tower Control. There's no subtlety to it. Jump in, spray ink everywhere like a Goddamn maniac, die, jab the screen on your teammate nearest the tower like a woodpecker, repeat. Well, that's how I play it. Maybe all you good players have a different strategy.

Argg I swear. I kept recording my matches just in case cool stuff happened, then yesterday I said "nothing cool ever happens, I wont bother recording this time." Sick match after sick match, including one splatzone where the opponent managed to stomp us early and get down to 1 second, then my team makes a crazy comeback. And no proof...

This is what I do with the lunablaster and gear with comeback and X2 quick respawn and it works really well for me. Slowly climbing from A+ to S Nearly every match I have the most kills AND deaths but I respawn so much faster with the nice comeback buff, run at the enemy like a bat out of hell fighting completely suicidally causing as much chaos as possible getting 1-3 kills every charge. All thats left is for my team to take advantage of it. LemonAIDS fucked around with this message at 22:24 on Aug 13, 2015 |

I just started playing ranked, at what point so people start moving out of the way of grenades? On a splat zone last night I ground tossed a splat grenade down a corridor and got a triple kill while most other times people just stand on top of grenades waiting for a prize to come out.

Lemming posted:The problem with tower control is that it's more restrictive of the play style necessary to win. This isn't inherently bad, the problem is when you get people who refuse to jump on the tower because they're scared and prefer to stay back. In splat zones you can be useful doing that, but in tower you need to jump on the tower sometimes, and some people never will. So it can lead to frustrating teams. Don't do this, you need to push and hold in Splat Zones in order to create advantage. Play Turf War if you don't feel like doing that

Play Turf War if you don't feel like doing that Yes, obviously, but you don't need to physically stand on the splat zone itself in order to control it. You can do that with longer range weapons by hanging back a bit and getting a vantage point, or once you've pushed, position yourself to get people as they approach. You can't do that with tower, sometimes you have to go up to the tower itself and stand on it no matter what weapon you're using, and that naturally puts you in a vulnerable position.

Tower Control is okay until it turns into "Who can go invulnerable most on the tower, wins", where it becomes a complete chore to play. I'm getting real tired of seeing '96 Gal Deco being about 50% of the weapons used in my matches.

Pfft, being splatted is basically a comeback buff recharger. You barely spend any time dead in ranked if you stack a few quick respawns.

with tower control, defending got a lot easier once i learned that you can squid jump to other teammates on the tower. the jump-in point follows the platform.

You can get a cycle going where your whole team chains respawn-jumps as you each get splatted. By the time the fourth team member dies, the first is jumping back onto the tower. A cycling engine of death, propelling the tower to victory.

Swimming away doesn't do much when the kraken isn't even chasing you, just sitting on the tower being invulnerable as it moves the last few feet towards the goal

Splatzones is fun but you haven't truly experienced Splatoon until you stop other team's tower push at 10 points with less then 20 seconds to go, only to have your entire team jump onto the tower and ride it into the enemy base like a four headed inkspewing pagan god of destruction for the overtime win.

Had some good matches this morning. First a very disappointing one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZgaZcGwf8Q Then the very next one after a bit of a team shuffle, I get swift vengence. Love the guy at the end that abandons the tower to kill a guy, allowing me to take it the rest of the way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GwlkC2T7h0 And me finally putting in some work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDZoXzR3AzY

And yeah, there's 0 chance Splatoon will appear on PC or other consoles because Nintendo made it, and they only make games for their stuff unlike other companies who port everything everywhere. Splatoon is crazy worth it though, go for it. (And also Mario Kart 8, Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World...)

Well, if the kid still has a functional 3DS there are a ton of great games for it that a kid would love. Pokemon, Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Kid Icarus, Sonic, Zelda, Xenoblade (assuming he's a patient kid), and many more.

By the way, a Wii U gamepad replacement costs almost as much as the system itself, so you may want to think about purchasing a rubber protective sleeve for a particularly clumsy kid.
