Yeah there are no shortage of blown-up EJ20Gs and EJ20Ks that you could work on if you hated yourself. If I had more space, one of the projects I want to do is to get a crashed JDM WRX and an intact LHD Brighton or OBS and swap parts into it.

The entire pipeline from all upstream and midstream providers has been down for a week. This could have something to do with it. One of the energy companies injected a lot of sour fluid by accident. Everyone upstream had to be shut in while they flared off the h2s. When it first happened they estimated it was a bill of $120,000,000. That was day 1. Edit: Apparently everything reopened early this morning. Alberta wouldn't recognize your commercial license anyways. long-haul drivers are in demand, you could probably apply to a few of the bigger companies like bison or trans-x and they might offer you a position contingent on you flying yourself over and getting your own license. Any kind of commercial driving experience and a clean driving record is probably better than the average fresh out of highschool on the brink of license loss candidates they find here. You could get your license in a week for $2500 through pretty much any training school here if you're not completely terrible. the test and most of the driving will almost certainly be with an unsynchronized transmission, and that's usually what throws off newbies/europeans. some testers and most trainers require you use the clutch, and even i'm terrible shifting with the clutch, it screws up my timing.

It's not an issue for me to fly over and get a Canadian commercial licence, i just need to find out what's required to go there as a driver. I could go as a qualified mech, but gently caress doing that job again. I have 3 points on my licence (speeding) and what i drive (3.5t van) is kinda classified as "commercial" but you can drive it on a car licence. Non-sync gearboxes isn't so much of an issue. I can/have floated gears, although it's much harder to float gears on a synchro box so not something i do often at all. (My old car was great for this, but current car and van aren't.) I'm wondering if i can get a Canadian licence, buy a truck and become O/O? That might be easier to get in if i'm starting a business as opposed to going as a skilled worker or a working holiday visa? If i can carry on at my current rate with the company i work for now i should be able to save up some good money over a couple years.

Yeah, i've been looking into it on and off for about 10 years. It's something that is often made to sound like it's quite straight-forward like "Are you a skilled worked on our list of in-demand trades? Well if so, come on right in!" In reality it's jumping through loving hoops, jobs lined up prior to application, limited places, points-based assesments, etc. Also, every time you read something about it, you read something else and they conflict, so it's loving difficult to determine what is true and what isn't, what jobs are on the list of in-demand, what any of the process is. I think when i have my poo poo together i'll pay an immigration lawyer to explain it and get it set up for me. That increases your chances too by having someone who knows the ins and outs of it all, but it comes at a price. I actually have a good deal at the moment with my current job (sub-contractor courier) and because i'm cheap as gently caress i can hopefully start saving now that i've paid almost all my debt off. You have to apply for the visa from outside the country, and it could take months to be approved. You also risk at the end of it not being allowed to stay and being out the cost of getting the license. I would say your first step is contact some of the larger long-haul companies, i'm sure they have tons of experience with this kind of stuff. There are a lot of russian, polish and indian truck drivers here.

As powershift will attest, the northern Alberta oilpatch trucking scenario is sort of a bubble. It's not really like this anywhere else in the world. With a few years offroad experience in the patch you kinda just choose which company gets the privilege of hiring you. As a company driver starting wage at my company is $38/hr, and $57 an hour after 10 hrs. If you plan your day right you can get your first 14 hours in actually working, and then get 10 hours wait time at a disposal facility where you sleep and still get paid. That's 24 hours paid in a day, 14 of which are overtime rate, and you don't even have to lie on your logbook. Work as many of those as you can before you are burnt out then take a few days off. That's $1178 per day before taxes rape you from every end. Now keep in mind not every day works out like that. There will be lots of days with nothing to do, or no wait times, and realistically I can only pull an 18 hour day of real work before becoming a danger. Driving in a snow storm offroad is fatiguing. Everywhere else in Canada that isn't here you're looking at something like $22/hr for a decent union job in town, or $.46 per mile for long haul.

Just to throw 2 cents into here, a buddy works for Bison and really likes them, and they do (or at least have) brought people from overseas over. Usually just requires a "work for us for X hours/months/years/whatever, or pay back what we spent on you if you quit" type of clause. Might be worth a conversation!
