that reminds me. there used to be these IE toolbars you could install to either surf for free, or make money while surfing. they worked by showing you ads in your browser and probably tracking you for analytics reasons if that was a thing back then. i spent forever trying to figure out how to game them to little success.

Those free internet providers didn't lock down their dialup access at all. It was easy enough to bypass their stupid malware DUN client and use Windows direct. Also I remember getting a cheque for $75 from GoToWorld, i spent a lot of time in chat rooms spamming that poo poo

I'm guilty of this. I made an error message that had an "oops" in it, and now all the tickets say "the UI is oopsing"

NO TENGO SCORPIO

at the same time i miss the casual air of the old file copy dialogs, putting 'this may take a while' up on your screen as a way to let you know they had no way of accurately computing what was going on when minting a fresh diskette of porny bitmaps and .bas games

the earliest thing like that i can remember was in 2006 or thereabouts when hosting company dreamhost had a glitch in their system that basically kept withdrawing the :10bux: monthly in an infinite loop from people's accounts, until the account in question was drained, resulting in things like people missing their mortgage payments and getting huge overdraft fees and the like. dreamhost's response, among other things, featured a picture of homer simpson at his nucler plant console, which people who were left destitute by the mistake didn't really appreciate

yeah also whats the point of the error code when it has a corresponding human readable code (in this case connection timeout)

What I want to know is who the hell is writing these messages. Around here we have our technical writers review all the messages for grammar and appropriateness because, surprise, you can't trust a bunch of Indian and Asian developers who speak English as their 3rd language to write coherent error messages. "Oops, our bad" wouldn't even make it past the first round of code review here.

i prefer that to a giant wall of text which may or may not be useful to the user.

mac users cant give anyone poo poo because that KERNEL PANIC stuff is the loving worst.

When I was there a few months back, the offerings from the big ISP's were super-weird. Your options were generally 40 gigs, 80 gigs, or unlimited, with a $5NZD difference between each.

lol microsoft has zero first party franchises that anyone's interested in

halo is a distant like third or fourth fiddle in console shooters, and they hosed up the latest one so badly that people still can't play it online reliably

fable's dead

they hosed up microsoft flight simulator so hard that now a bunch of dudes working out of their basements are doing a far better job

You're already dead

Yeah "whimsical" error messages are always a bad idea because you never know the context they will appear in

I feel like a while back there was an example where Buzzfeed or something had a post about some tragedy and some of their embedded media was broken and it displayed an oh so wacky error message in their place and it was some tactless tonal whiplash
