Nations are not benevolent, they act in self interest even when they are giving cute little handouts to their people. Trump understands this and wants to make the country great not necessarily the people. Liberals want to have it both ways and thats why it always crashes and burns, because the nation state is a power arrangement like any other, looking out for itself and trying to silence the opposition. It doesnt have the capacity to give and give and give, its capacities are constantly eroding. Having said that, cheap health care and cheap education would be pretty good for everyone involved (and trump is interested in at least one of those).

Both of the populist candidates are mostly attracting white support. I know there are specific reasons for that in both cases but it's a weird coincidence.
