Well, just went to a local tournament and went 2-1 (244/300 pts). I was using Keyan+Ten+Wedge and lost against a 4x TIE-A list, after taking out half their ships (not Vader unfortunately).
Still, I came fourth out of thirteen, so it was definitely better than I was expecting, so I'm happy with the outcome! Got some nice plastic evade tokens out of it, too. (+custom RS card)

I ran Kath(VI/HLC/K4 Security/EU) and two thugs with ions and BTL in a tournament on wednesday and went 2-1, only losing because I forgot about simultaneous fire and also because I missed a range one main gun shot with a thug against Dash despite having a TL.

I have to say, i'm finding in this game that HP is the most reliable defense of all.

They're my favourite ship design in all of Star Wars and I can't think of any other spaceship design I like more, but I absolutely hate flying them and the non-EPT ones really need to cost 2-3 fewer points. :(

The cheap ones can't really be much cheaper because of their 3 dice attack. The thing is, the tie int's game is way better with high PS than low PS.

Yeah, simple action economy. You don't want to be using 3 attack ships as blockers. Unless it's the lambda but look at how slow it is.

Every time I've flown Scum Kath I've put Veteran Instincts on her or tried experimenting with other weird things like Expert Handling, but thinking about how quickly the Firespray seems to die and the fact that I rarely find myself in a good position to use the ship's Evade as opposed to something else I'm considering just putting Push the Limit on her and being done with it. K4 Security Droid means I want to be doing some green maneuvers anyway and it helps keep my action economy from being crap. Of course this leaves her at PS 7 which can be a dangerous place to be, but I haven't had better luck keeping her alive at PS 9 so gently caress it.

Eh the only thing they cant do is mini swarm support for a bigger ship because of their cost. Reg Ties outside of Backstabber dont have any individual dog fighters so I would give the Ints the advantage there. You can swarm just as well with Ints (3 alpha/howl/acad/backstabber is just as good as a 7-tie swarm). Other than that the only role of a Tie is filler and you dont really base a list around filler.

She dies fast but I think moving last really helps her survivability. I prefer PS9 and a 1 point bid to make sure she goes last.

Seeing a lot of people post lists with cards from the Raider but no one has actually talked about using it yet. As much as ATC, Palpatine, and the other wonderful cards that accompany the Tie Advanced seem worth-while for any Imperial player, the reality is that the Raider is merely a 100$ tie advanced booster.

Unless someone can actually describe play with the midget star destroyer, I feel I might just buy and advance and play with proxy cards.

The reality is that buying the Raider is going to be more of a worthwhile investment if you have some friends willing to play some Epic scale games, so if you want to justify the $100 purchase then get some friends together and play some 300 point games, or run the campaign that comes with it. I played some games with a guy who brought the Tantive IV and we did a couple campaign missions and it was honestly pretty fun.

Epic play is for people who enjoy having one game take up the entirety of a day. It's not for everyone. I tried it twice and it was the same as when I tried apocalypse for 40k or other larger games using smaller scale rules: it was miserable.

There's a reason why war games that are designed to accommodate company/battalion level fighting are different from platoon level games and have more abstraction of individual soldiers. Imagine x-wing with 20+ dials to set every single turn. Might as well play armada at that point since the bombers and fighters will probably want to stay in formation anyway.

I've yet to play a proper Epic game but the campaign stuff I played seemed pretty reasonable in that regard. It was stuff like "the Tantive with X points in upgrades versus Howlrunner + 5 Academy Pilots" and "The Tantive and 50 points of Rebel ships versis 125 points of Imperials with some reinforcements on both ends and special conditions."

Yeah the campaign specific stuff is much better and limited.

If the dice go for that much I might just sell mine and save up for worlds next year. Hmm

Epic play is awesome, but it will take you like 4 hours to get the game finished. The raider is built to stab right into the heart of your opponent's fleet and fire fire fire. The huge ships all work best when closely supported by your fighters and large ships. Once your support gets distracted or shot down, you're dead. Last game I played, I threw Biggs+R2-F2 behind a GR-75 with EM emitter, keeping Biggs in range of the raider, and my opponent chased down my a-wings instead of concentrating his fighters on bringing my combo down. As a result, every time his raider took a shot, it was at Biggs, who was throwing 6 or 7 green dice. He was not happy.

Escalation tournament at the FLGS today, took 2nd out of 13. Highlight of the day was probably Wedge firing a Proton Torpedo at range 3 and blowing a Z-95 out of space on the very first dice roll of the game. At one point in round 4, Corran had five stress tokens, an ion token, and three red target locks on him. Exactly zero of those target locks were used, as every single ship that had taken them died before firing another shot. Corran was down to 1 shield for a tense moment, and ended the game with two stress tokens and full shields. It was a good game. Same round as Wedge mulching that Z with a torp. Also that round, Wedge murdered a B-wing at range 1 with a hit and three crits that took off the last two shields, and then went direct hit, direct hit. Wedge was by far the star of that game.

Round 1:
Luke Skywalker (28)
Wedge Antilles (29)
- Predator (3)

Total: 60

Round 2:
Horton Salm (25)

Total: 85

Round 3:
Corran Horn (35)

Total: 120

Round 3:

Luke:
Lone Wolf (2)
Stealth Device (3)

Wedge:
Proton Torpedo (4)
Munitions Failsafe (1) [redundant, in hindsight]

Horton:
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Flechette Torpedo (2)

Corran:
Fire Control System (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Shield Upgrade (4)
Push the Limit (3)

Total: 150

How small? What ships do you have? I think the easiest way to learn the game is with highly maneuverable ships with low survivability-- You learn the game better by playing more games faster anyway. Brobots, Soontir, A-wings (also a good lesson in how lovely 2 red is), and anything with boost/roll and PTL is great for learning positioning, timing and distance because you want to know what the fastest and most maneuverable ships in the game are capable of when you go up against them. That said, the first game should probably be all unnamed pilots because you don't want a newbie to have to worry about synergies. If you have any turreted ships they should run them too so they can focus on flying and avoiding asteroids and less on firing arc.

I guess a lot depends on the person doing the learning so tailor lists based on what they have trouble with. I remember the slowest thing for me to internalize was turn order because I was was always thinking about my synergies and the big picture. So don't let them fly same-PS ships for too long, you wanna get people using low and high PS pilots together so they can get the hang of activation/shooting order and blocking and whatnot.

A wings vs tie interceptors, using lower pilot skill, provide a great way to learn positions, the value of repositioning, and tempo. It's also a great way to get people hooked on nasty auto thruster-enabled ships :evilbuddy:

I'd go for variety first, simply because some people aren't going to like flying at the mercy of their green dice, or actually don't like the sheer number of maneuvering options that come with two repositions and a ridiculously good dial.

Indeed.

Luke + R2-D2 + Stealth Device + Vet Instincts and Garven Dreis + R2 Astromech is 63 points, which leaves enough room to take Poe + Autothrusters + R5-P9 + Vet Instincts and come out to 100 points on the nose.

I wouldn't even bother with R2 Astromech on Garvin. 99 points is more valuable as an initiative bid than shaking the stress from the X-wing's exactly one red maneuver. Garvin shouldn't be the primary target to start.
