But the fact that he killed two people by making them fall to their deaths when they had just been shown to be wearing antigravity boots has always bugged the hell out of me. They're being lowered by a device on the vehicle/spaceship thing, but I will totally grant that this could be shown much more clearly.

Promethea had a pretty good riff on the FF as I recall, the Five Swell Guys. now they make hamburgers or something idk e: The Thing's analogue was by far the most entertaining, instead of Ben Grimm being turned into an orange rocky monster you have Roger getting turned into a hot beefy redhead and coping with getting groped and relentlessly hit on by jerks Flesh Forge fucked around with this message at 19:50 on Aug 23, 2015 |

A lot of them did that classic thing where they do poo poo that leads to their own demise so that technically the hero stays innocent but yeah, a remarkable number of enemies died in his vicinity. Bruce was a real rear end in a top hat to that guy in his final moments, too. I mean yeah, there was nothing he could do to save him, or he probably would've, but drat. I did like how he just let Ras die, because it's like, come on, that guy should have been dead ages ago.

Batman Beyond had a bad habit of killing off villains, or turning them into gross monsters rather than letting them become a recurring part of Terry's Rogues Gallery. Like the Chimera guy, who made instant furry mutation drugs, and Terry beat him by jamming full of every needle of the stuff he could carry until the guy burst.
|
# ? Aug 23, 2015 23:11 |
The villains were also strikingly one-dimensional compared to Batman: The Animated Series. No angst, no tragic origin, no pathological obsession, they were just assholes who sometimes turned into monsters. Blight was pretty good, but Big Time? What a lovely villain.

To be fair to BB (and to bring this full circle a bit), it had a lot less continuity to work with and had to balance establishing new characters with providing sufficient action to justify its continued existence and build its fanbase, all without strip-mining BtAS for ideas. Given what it was following up on and how long it lasted, I really think the show did a remarkably good job of it- though I totally agree it got quite killy.

Better than having villians constantly get away and break out every week. Spellbinder was the only reccuring villian that didn't have much depth, Inque and Blight were both pretty three diminsional and so were most of the one shots.

Let's see... there were the FF equivalents in Alan Moore's 1963, the barely-veiled parody of the FF in "The Venture Brothers," the Inferior Five, the Incredibles, arguably Bill Willingham's Elementals when you consider the matching symbolism, the various self-parodies from What The--?!, and the Marvel Mangaverse (where Johnny was a chick and Reed could "stretch his brain" to get smarter).

I also remember the one where Bane has become a decrepit Venom-addicted invalid hooked up to a respirator whose minder is using his blood (?) to turn Venom into a performance-enhancing street drug, then dies (?) when he accidentally overdoses in a fight with Batman. Did any of the show's artists or animators ever produce any concept art of what Curare's face was meant to look like?

Didn't Justice League Unlimited straight-up kill Terry in that time-travel episode? I don't remember it exactly because it wasn't one of my favourites, but I remember he gets it from the twin Joker girls, of all people.
