Lucy Heartfilia posted:challenge for the thread: find a good blob architecture building Zaha Hadid's (Heydar Aliyev Center) is quite impressive, structurally and aesthetically. There are many others, but it's obvious that you have a blockade up against anything that deviates from the norm. Good luck with your astringent attitude!

I wouldn't really consider that an example of blobitecture (I'm not terribly impressed with its design, though). To me blobitecture is more like bulging and swelling, whereas that building is more like a sheet in the wind.

Clockwork Sputnik posted:The reason the LA skyline looks the way it does is because of some forward-thinking-at-the-time building code which required every building over X stories must have a roof that can accommodate a helicopter landing pad. On google maps, I counted 30-some helipads in a 6-block radius in central Downtown. When the Hall of Justice was damaged in the '94 quake a new jail was set to be built. It cost $400 million and by the time it was finished, the state was going through a recession, so there were no funds to actually run the jail. It sat empty for a while which made people want to break in, which resulted in the city posting cops to deter trespassers. It's considered one of the worst jails in the country, with terrible conditions and rampant use of psych meds to subdue inmates. Wikipedia posted:The jail is in close proximity to the civic center It has one of the ugliest color schemes I've ever seen. It kinda tries to have an intimidation look, but it's so loving ugly.

Not being a scientist, biologist (or whatever plant subprofession), or city planner, how feasible would a city with exclusively plant/roof gardens be? I imagine roof damage would be a problem (depending on climate) at least.

The Skeleton King posted:Brutalism can make some really cool structures. It usually looks great when used to make simple, powerful shapes, and often goes very well when mixed with trees and vegetation. The idea is to create an image of power and simplicity, shapes that look clean and unpretentious. This got posted earlier in the threat before the traffic derail. Even though this technically predates brutalism as a style, I think it's a perfect example of what you're talking about. All the more so because it's purely functional: let's build a tower to fire artillery from. This looks like nothing so much as a stack of semiconductor wafers. this would give me great joy as a kid, and as an adult I would at least drive by it with fond memories of when we drove by that funny fish building. there's this electric plant along the highway near where I live, with huge steam clouds going all the time. at age 31 I still call it the "cloud factory" because I was so dumb as a child I thought that was where clouds came from.

I know it's been mentioned before, but the Hammons Tower in Springfield, MO is kinda badass, especially when it's lit up by the stadium across the street at night. I still think it should've been the Tyrell Corporations's HQ in Blade Runner.
