I wouldn't talk to him at work. Actually if I found myself working with him I'd biomass myself. If he stays silent and gives the dev version of 'because I said so,' it's a failure. The only thing he has to lose is his pride in revealing some of his theorycrafting to the player forum. Yes there will be poo poo spewed everywhere, but the point would be the occasional useful bits to brainstorm with. I think his role would be better served by crowdsourcing the playerbase, which includes subject matter experts in all fields of the game. There are no trade secrets worth keeping when it comes to game balance in EVE. No other games company is looking to EVE for cutting edge innovations in anything game-related. Fozzie's under a fuckton of stress; his name is associated, whether he deserves it or not, with an unpopular feature. And this is relatively unprecedented in Eve's history; nobody called the old sov mechanics "Abathursov." We didn't exactly refer to Phoebe as "Grayscaledrives" despite the fact that he deserved it. He is scrambling to find fixes, for a system that wasn't exclusively his creation, under an extremely short timeline. I'm pointing and laughing at that thread just as much as anyone else -- probably even more so, since I know how to read a database dump and can see the effects, and understand why this behavior is happening -- but cut the man a tiny bit of slack. I'd picket too maybe if I didn't have to go to Iceland first. I still don't think he's excused from having a bit more open discussion. In closing, I miss Soundwave very much. The way he fielded questions live was perfect. He was forthcoming, his explanations made sense, and his tone and demeanor did a lot to keep players civil.

The main thing I try to remember is that a lot of the game balance guys are not programmers. (Which is extra hard for me, since I'm a programmer.) Fozzie, Rise, etc. are limited to fiddling whatever knobs the code monkeys are willing/able to give them. He can ask for new knobs, certainly, but that takes time and budget. There is a long-running project at CCP that basically involves redesigning all the balance knobs in a way that makes it easier to turn them, and to add new knobs. But it's not here yet. In the meantime, everyone has to make do with what they have. This is why, for example, some of the Tech3 destroyer bonuses are actually implemented server-side by attaching pirate frigate bonuses to the hull and then setting those knobs appropriately; it's a clever little hack that nobody notices unless they happen to take a very close look at the Dogma database. And ultimately, it's a hack that works.
