So poor old Pookie is having an overnight at the vet's today Someone gave her a ball of aluminium foil (!?) to play with yesterday, which she chewed up thoroughly before I got up. Panicky googling told me that foil eating could cause death within 72 hours so I got the earliest possible appointment this morning and thankfully our lovely and very parrot-knowledgeable vet was not terribly concerned about the foil chewing unless she swallowed bits of it, but the fact that she is still intermittently chewing her feathers and constantly trying to build nests in boxes means that Pookie is going to be given a hormone implant!. She is going to have to be anesthetized for that and be x-rayed to check for metal particles at the same time. Please send all your positive thoughts her way Edit: it's really really weird being at home but with Pookie not here - I keep finding myself unconciously listening out for her, hearing nothing and suddenly remembering she's at the vet's. As for the birds as tools...eh...maybe? Simon makes a good alarm system to tell us 1) when the sun is rising, 2) the cage is closed and that is wrong because HE's in charge of the apartment and wants to be out, and 3) holy poo poo, there's a guest, and all guests are out to destroy everything so loud sounds must happen (and they might be wearing a hat). He could also make a good guard dog, but only against bearded men. Gunter could possibly be some kind of knife(?) and she'll definitely defend us against all hands/fingers and the Black Leather Doom Glove. And then there's Pazuzu...he'd make a good...something? He doesn't really do much of anything yet. Oh! He makes a good alarm to tell us if Gunter has left the room he's in. As for the bug-slaying, Gunter has killed one spider that we're aware of. This displeases jade (because he's a weirdo who likes spiders) and makes me proud of my little bitch bird/gremlin.

I looked at cute animals to make me feel better and then I saw a cat trying to eat a computer screen and it reminded me of how Bitey loved trying to eat/chase my cursor And tried to eat anything yellow/red/pink/orange on the screen, and attacked my fingers when I played cookie clicker games on my phone And also shredded my leather phone case when I wasn't looking.

They really really should have known not to do this but they do have a bit of a history of being a tad thoughless when it comes to bird appropriate food and chewables. I think this might have come as a wake-up call about the need to CHECK before giving her anything new to play with or eat.

A Saucy Bratwurst posted:If this sort of thing has happened before ok be very mad. Oh believe me, I was. I do feel much much happier now though - I mentioned before that we're lucky enough to have literally the only specialist avian vet in the country operate her surgery 5 minutes from my house. Before that, Pookie was treated by a couple of non-specialist vets and the difference is huge; Bairbre just knows what you're talking about when you describe your birds behaviour/problems to her, it's very reassuring

And usually what happens in Bird thread, stays in Bird thread for me. I'm sorry also that the memory made you sad-- for me, the sadness never disappears entirely when I think of a departed friend, but it gets drowned out over time by the joy the thought of those times bring. I know it will be a while, but I hope one day you will be able to share more stories of Bitey with us to rejoice in the wonderful time he had with you. Because we all know he was lucky to have had you. Pookah, I'm glad Pookie is likely safe from harm-- the ability of the African grey to destroy while remaining untouched is immense, but it was wrong for your friend to take that chance. Hope the hormonal "leash" makes Pookie a little less nesty and plucky (in the feather sense, only).

It's easy to forget how fragile parrots (or any bird, really) can be under all their bluster and yelling and attitude. Things can happen even when you do things 100% right, but it's still hard You did great by Bitey while he was with you, Crow, and that is the important thing.

Pookie Update! I just called the vet as scheduled and everything is fine Pookie is awake and perching if a bit wobbly and the x-ray showed no signs of metal in her system. The vet did say she saw a couple of possible higher density things (maybe paper) in her crop but when she investigated with the scope all was well. She had her hormone chip put in and has also been microchipped and had her nails done. She's going to have some rice for her dinner because when she was being checked in for the overnight stay, they have a checklist for what your bird likes to eat and I said rice was always good, and the nurse was all "I have rice for my lunch - I'll save some for her!" I was worrying because she hadn't had any breakfast at all (because anaesthetic) and if they handed her a bowl of the wrong pellets or weird raw veggies she would be pissed off. The microchipping was a total afterthough on my part; when I got home it occurred to be that since she was going to be anesthetized anyway it'd make a lot of sense to get that done at the same time, it's something I've been meaning to do for years, so I rang the surgery and asked if it could be tagged on to everything else. Yay Pookie, glad she's doing fine. I'd like to microchip mine but only Ohtori is big enough, and only just so I'd rather not put him through it if possible. No one would check a parrot for a chip here anyway.

Pookie's home again! I got to see her x-rays, which were interesting in and of themselves but I also got to see the things that might actually be foil, which was a bit unnerving. Her vet is very confident that if they are foil they are too small to cause any trouble though, and the foil you get in this country is non-toxic. Got really good news on the food front too - Pookie won't eat the really good pellets, but since they are basically made from lentils and chickpeas, I've got the go ahead to switch her over to modified daal with rice, so I'm going to be cooking up some special curry for parrots later today (She ate 5 chickpeas when she got home, plus half a bird muffin and some peas! Apparently she stuffed and stuffed when they gave her rice last night ) (You can see the remains of the chickpea feast in the background) Edit: She's so sleepy Pookah fucked around with this message at 14:41 on Aug 25, 2015 |
