They also do this really weird thing where they post pictures of their wives and girlfriends playing across the table in nice dresses then tell each other how much they want to gently caress each other's wives and girlfriends.

It's bizarre.

It's why I'm SO HAPPY to be here, you guys are awesome. I only interact with BGG'ers now on the GCL and the occasional try to inform post. It's too bad that they won't moderate like they do here on somethingawful.com.

Considering their entire site looks like it was frozen in time somewhere around the year 1998 or so I'd say that's pretty cutting edge.

But mana shuffle isn't meant to provide a truly random distribution of cards. The designers considered the risk of mana screw and mana floods to be a feature of the game. The mana shuffle is just a passive-aggressive way of disagreeing with the game designers.

It's not even that. Humans are just bad at understanding randomness. I've seen people claim that a properly randomized deck should give them exactly 40% lands because that's what they put in the deck. 40% of their drawn cards should be lands, so getting a no land hand or a 6+ land hand is obviously impossible in truly random deck. Which leads them to think mana weaving "helps" the deck be properly random.

Exactly.
If you did a hundred independent trials with properly randomized deck reshuffled each time, you'd expect a 6 card no lands/all lands draw to happen 5% of the time, or 5 times. This is the most likely result.

But it's possible that it could happen 0 times, or 100 times, or anything in between in that set of trials.

Mana shuffle is bogus anyway because players can count cards in their own deck as they draw, which I think can cause some cheaty combos with cards.

Oh, Jesus, "guy".

For anyone not familiar with the awfulness that is the BGG images section, until a couple years ago every picture with a woman in it was tagged "girl". It was the most popular tag on the site. That was too embarrassing for even the BGG admins.

Almost nobody there can write a decent review. Most of them are rambling, go-nowhere travelogues that talk about gaming with their group, it was a cool friday night, so-and-so brought nachos and expensive beer, and then and then and then and then.

Then the punchline is always "It was OK, but not as good as [beloved game with any sort of similar mechanic]"

An excellent description of BGG circa 2007. Before it got really big BGG was very cliquey and full of people whose main attraction to gaming was the perception that like them, Germans have no sense of humour. The most mirthful thing any of them ever did was find excuses to use the Busen Memo meme.

Cool! Yeah, I really enjoy some of the conversations he's had with samo and various people about games that sort of break the mold of modern euros and thematic games, favoring instead games that have high interaction and low rules overhead. Hunted down a bunch of games on his list here: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/164097/qwertymartins-top-60-games

Went down the rabbit hole and read a bunch of the discussion on this list https://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/151368/what-we-talk-about-when-we-talk-about-frameworks, and this thread https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/899370/non-aligned-movement-aka-people-first-games-not-eu, this post https://www.boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/15759/i-am-what-i-play-2012-review, etc

It would be cool to see this category of games be further defined

I still like some of the euros and thematic games that he doesn't like, but it's refreshing to see a different perspective that focuses on games that are emphasize interaction and lower rules overhead

Stalking martin also sent me on a knizia binge that has been pretty cool
