slidebite posted:Just got an email from my folks saying the transfer case on there 2003 2500HD Duramax has a crack in it. As Powershift said, this is extremely common. As i understand it's not a huge job to pull that casing, and there are repair kits for the clip that causes the issue. Also, depending on the case's material (aluminium/magnesium) you could have it welded up by a good welder. If it is cracked, usually where repairable the fix is to drill a hole at the end(s) of the crack, which stops the crack speading, and then the crack is ground into a groove and filled with weld.

Sounds like they already got it fixed. I'm assuming they went new, and possibly at the dealer. Guesses on how much? I'll send a prize to the closest but not over winner. They had a diesel guy already do the injectors on it last year. Any other common issues with the GMT800 that could be a ticking time bombs?

I'll make 10,000 guesses: $1-10,000 Please message me for instructions on where to send the prize.

i'd bet about $3,800. $3,000 for the case, $800 in labor

The ABS module and front sensors (the latter will cause random ABS engagement, thus intermittently disabling the brakes, and IIRC the former was mostly fixed with the '03 facelift), front ends are weak and eat control arm bushings and ball joints- the joints should be greasable though and most of the ball joint issues are because people run them dry, there's a breakout box above the dead pedal that likes to collect water and short/corrode to hell if you pressure wash the floor or otherwise get that area wet, and the fuel pumps are poo poo (not sure if the dmax has an in-tank transfer pump or if it just relies on the HPFP to pull the fuel? if it doesn't have the in-tank pump you're cool). A coworker asked me to list some of his stuff on Kijiji, and I just wanted to run some prices past you guys to see how reasonable they are. They're OEM takeoffs from his 2009 Audi S5. He drove it about 12k km's and then had a Stasis suspension and brakes (and almost everything else) put on. He still had the springs, shocks and front brakes in his garage, so I'm putting them on the internet and we'll split the proceeds. I was thinking about $250 for the springs/shocks (all 4 corners) and $200 for the brakes on Kijiji. Too much? Too little?

I would recommend he keep all that in case he has a problem with the new parts or sells the car or something. Having to buy new oem suspension in a few months because he decides he doesn't like the ride would cost a lot more than $250.

$250 is more than reasonable for the suspension, I'd probably price them a bit higher if he's not in a rush just to see what you can get. If you can just stuff them into a run of the mill A5 I'd be tempted to go higher and play up that angle. What do the brakes include? Rotors? Calipers?
|
# ? Aug 25, 2015 04:45 |

I don't know what the Audi market is like but I'd ask for 300 for the suspension to leave a bit more negotiating room. Really no idea about the brakes though, I had to drop my pants the last time I sold brake components on Kijiji and they were new in box.

Definitely good advice but he changed them five years ago and loves the ride, haha. They've just been sitting in a box in his garage since then and he just wants to clear up the space. 1500quidporsche posted:$250 is more than reasonable for the suspension, I'd probably price them a bit higher if he's not in a rush just to see what you can get. The A5 is probably a safe bet. It would be awesome if they'd bolt onto an A4 because then the market would be huge but I'm not an Audi guy so I'm not sure.

Seat Safety Switch posted:Or hit a liquor store. I drove from Seba Beach (80km west of Edmonton, just off hwy 16) to Saskatoon four times in June and July, and every trip I hit up liquor stores for boxes along the way. Hat tip to Solo Liquor on the western edge of Lloydminster, they always had a dozen or so for me to take. Some places only had 2-3, others had a couple of dozen (but sometimes smaller boxes, like for mickeys of vodka or whatever). If you or anyone you know works at a university or college, the cardboard recycle bin near the loading dock at the back of the largest building on campus - science departments are better than humanities, but even the Library will recieve more cardboard than they can use - will be full of collapsed boxes. A lab that's just bought a new toy / mid-level equipment will unload a dozen big, sturdy boxes in a day. Sometimes the door nearest the bin is locked, but an employee / grad student will have a key to the building, typically.

It's their land sure, but we're not talking about building a casino. Profiteering off a road that was built with public funds as a detour from due to an emergency which closed a highway for a couple hours is slimy as gently caress and will certainly not help relations for those that forked over some arbitrary $20 "toll" The elder was also incorrect. Parks Canada does not charge you to go through a national park. Only if its your destination or that's the terminus of the road. If Parks Canada started charging everyone going through Banff or Jasper on a Trans-Canada there would be a revolt.

They do charge everybody who goes through jasper national park. Even if you're just using the little bit from Banff park to nordegg. Just got some winter tires for the f250. Narrow tires on 16 inch steelies for summer and fat winter tires on shiny 20s is the way to do it , right?

Going through Banff they even have a dedicated lane for through traffic. If they stopped everyone to pay traffic would be backed up to Calaway Park. Tire chat though, digging that tread. What is it? Has anyone here price compared at booking a car rental through Costco? We're going to N.S. -> PEI in a couple of weeks and need to rent a 1-way rental from Halifax to Charlottetown. Rate through Costco seems OK but

The last time I went through, they charged 10 bucks a head to get from the park border to nordegg. I remember that clearly because I called the guy a oval office and he completely lost his poo poo. Since then I've just gone through Banff and Cochrane. The tires are the same as I had on my f150, only 275/65r20 instead of 275/55r20. Avalanche x-treme. Got the full set for $400. 2 are 90% 2 are 70%. And the rims are factory 20s without a whole bunch of extraneous bolts and rivets that every aftermarket 8 bolt wheel has.the finish is rough but they are actual aluminum, not a plastic cap like modern wheels, so I'll be able to strip the clear and polish them to perfection.

Including the rims for $400? Score. You must have gave the parks guy the stink eye or made him think you were stopping in the park, because if you say you are driving straight through there is no pass required for Jasper via 16 or Banff via #1. To my knowledge there never has been and I've been driving them all off and on since the early 90s. Technically, even if you stop for gas or use a campground shitter you are supposed to get a pass but nobody ever does.

The only park in AB that charges a transit fee is the Icefields Parkway, which runs south from Jasper. Highway 93. So I you were headed to Nordegg, that's probably the one you were taking and there are big signs everywhere sayin that all users even in transit must pay. So the guy wasn't being a oval office. I agree that it's lovely opportunism on the Stoney Reserve. They didn't build those roads and they don't maintain them. That money isn't going into the roads at all. Whatever complaints the native people have, they won't be resolved by screwing over the commuters on the highway.

Buick is obviously the wrong brand to do it with, but i would be more interested in a stripped out alpha platform chevy nova, 2 door or 4 door, i4 base, lt1 as a box to tick on the base model.
